UFC Fight Night 144 results: Live streaming play-by-play updates for ‘Assuncao vs Moraes 2’ on ESPN+ in Fortaleza

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is making its return to the ESPN+ digital network for another round of mixed martial arts (MMA) action, this time in the form of UFC Fight Night 144: “Assuncao vs. Moraes 2,” set for this Sat. night (Feb. 2, 2019) inside Northeast Olympic Training Center in Fortaleza, Brazil. As the name suggests, this weekend’s event will be topped by the bantamweight rematch pitting top-ranked contenders, Raphael Assuncao and Marlon Moraes, against one another for the second time, with the winner moving on to fight for the 135-pound title. In the featherweight co-main event, former division champion, Jose Aldo, will try to quell the uprising of Brazilian phenom, Renato Carneiro. Don’t have ESPN+? Round 1: Moraes opens with a leg kick. Assuncao tries a 1-2. Spinning back kick attempt, oblique kick lands. One minute in. Jab exchange. More jabs. Overhand right rocks Assuncao and another behind it puts him on his rear. Assunceo manages to tie Moraes up in guard. Assuncao looking to use butterfly guard. Half guard goes Moraes and he lands some solid blows. Good right hand and he latches onto a guillotine, sweeping to mount and drawing the tap.

Final result: Moraes def. Assuncao by submission (guillotine choke)


145 lbs.: Jose Aldo vs. Renato Moicano

Round 1: Moicano tries a front kick to start. Both men showing lots of feints early. One minute in. Aldo whiffs on a leg kick, then the ESPN+ stream dies again. Counter right from the former champ, low kick from Moicano, harder low kick from Aldo. Leg kick and left hook land for Aldo. Moicano with a low kick of his own. Aldo checks the next kick and blocks one to the head two minutes in. Aldo whiffs on a leg kick and they briefly clinch. Moicano tries a head kick. Two minutes to go.

Aldo goes to the body, eats a left hook in return. Another body blow. Moicano lands a jab. Combination upstairs. They trade, Moicano lands a good left. One minute to go. Low kick lands for Moicano. Another clean jab. 10-9 Aldo.

Round 2: Moicano busy with low kicks and jabs to start. Aldo eats a shot and the beast comes out. He charges after Moicano with punches, unloading to the head and body with hooks. A clinch knee rattles Moicano and Aldo continues his rush until the ref steps in.

Final result: Aldo def. Moicano by TKO (knee and punches)


170 lbs.: Demian Maia vs. Lyman Good

Round 1: Maia pressuring early. He shoots, drags Good to the mat. Good struggling to get back up, but Maia remains stubborn. Good gets to his feet and Maia immediately jumps on his back a minute in. Maia locking up the choke, contending with Good’s hands. Two minutes in. Full body triangle. Maia continues to adjust and draws the tap.

Final result: Maia def. Good by submission (rear naked choke)


155 lbs.: Charles Oliveira vs. David Teymur

Round 1: They trade low kicks to start. Teymur tries a head kick and pokes Oliveira in the eyes. Plural. Ref takes a point because of the severity. Then ESPN+ dies again because why the hell not. They resume and Oliveira tries to call timeout, but the ref tells them to continue. Oliveira lands a jumping front kick. Oliveira marching after him, waving him on, and he’s immediately dropped by a straight left for his trouble. Teymur follows him down into guard, then stands when Oliveira starts to threaten. Oliveira still stalking. Teymur’s right eye is damaged from that kick. Oliveira claims another eye poke, ref stays continue. Oliveira hits a takedown and a scramble ensues. Crazy transition and Oliveira looks for a leg, eating punches. Back to the feet. Oliveira tries to spin. Two minutes to go.

Body kick from Oliveira. Flying knee lands clean for him. Straight right buzzes Teymur. Teymur to the body, eats another knee. Trading hooks. One minute to go. Oliveira tries to spin, lands punches. Oliveira whiffs on a wheel kick, eats a body shot. Teymur cracks Oliveira around the guard. 9-9 with the deduction.

Round 2: Straight left from Teymur to start. They trade in the center. Olliveira rocks him with an up-elbow and unloads with punches until Teymur leaves his neck open, at which point he snaps on his signature anaconda for the finish.

Final result: Oliveira def. Teymur by submission (anaconda choke)


205 lbs.: Justin Ledet vs. Johnny Walker

Round 1: Walker drops Ledet with a spinning backfist in the opening seconds, then thankfully misses the follow-up soccer kick behind it. A few more punches and Ledet is done.

Final result: Walker def. Ledet by KO (spinning back fist and punches)


115 lbs.: Livinha Souza vs. Sarah Frota

Round 1: Frota looks gigantic next to Souza. Souza comes out kicking regardless. Frota tries a body kick, lands a straight left. Souza clinches and hits a beautiful throw. Frota scrambles up, avoids a guillotine and settles in guard a minute in. Frota unable to really posture up so far. Two minutes in. Solid elbow. Souza threatens an armbar, not there. She goes for it again a minute later and nearly gets it, but Frota escapes. Two minutes to go.

Both throwing hard on the feet. Front kick from Frota, who sprawls on a shot and ties up on the cage. Frota avoids a throw with a minute to go. Souza looks for a double-leg. Frota jumps guard and lands on the bottom. Souza connects with some hard punches before the bell. 10-9 Souza.

Round 2: Frota plodding forward, eats a straight right. Frota dings Souza, who tries to tie up. They separate. Overhand right from Souza, who hits a takedown into guard. Frota attempting rubber guard. She’s keeping Souza from doing anything. Two minutes in. Ref stands them up. Souza with another nice takedown. Frota looks for an armbar, no dice. Frota makes it to her feet, eats a right hand, sprawls on a shot with two minutes to go.

Pressing Souza against the fence. They separate. One minute to go. Souza with a nice shot and transitions directly to the back. Fighting for the choke. Both hooks in. Opening up with hard right handsm, locks up the choke but runs out of time. 10-9 Souza.

Round 3: Souza opens with a body kick, tries a shot, eats left hands. She denies a shot and gets underhooks to separates. Lead right by Souza. Frota stalking, eats a right hand. Souza fails a shot and pulls guard a minute in. Big hammerfists by Frota. Ref stands them up, which seems premature. Two minutes in. Frota tries a high kick. Body kick lands. Then ESPN+ dies for a minute. Two minutes to go.

Frota stuffs a shot and Souza tries to pull guard. Frota kicking her legs. Ref stands them up again. They trade power hands. Body kick exchange. One minute to go. Right hand by Souza. 1-2 buckles Souza and Frota is on the march. Low kick from Souza. Overhand right and body kick by Souza. 10-9 Frota.

185 lbs.: Anthony Hernandez vs. Markus Perez

Round 1: Hernandez blitzes with punches and ties up on the fence. Perez reverses with double underhooks. Perez heaves him into the air from the rear waistlock a minute in, looking for the back. Hernandez separates with a spinning elbow and hard hook. Perez waves him on and lands a body kick. Jockeying for position on the fence. Hernandez lands a nice elbow inside and a hard blow on the break. Overhand left and uppercut hurt Hernandez and now it’s Perez charging in. Hernandez denies the takedown. Two minutes to go.

They trade right hands. Overhand left by Perez. Hernandez presses him agaisnt the fence and gets reversed again. One minute to go. They separate and Hernandez chases with punches. Low kick knocks him off-balance. Hug tornado by Hernandez, who cracks Perez with right hands on the fence. Perez looks to spin, cracked with another right. Hernandez blasting him on the fence, Perez comes back with a jumping knee. 10-9 Perez.

Round 2: Perez badly hurts Hernandez with a body kick right off the bat, then takes the back to defend the desperate takedown. Hernandez manages to shake him off and get to his feet, but Perez has an anaconda choke locked up. He pulls Hernandez down and puts on the squeeze for the finish.

Final result: Perez def. Hernandez by submission (anaconda choke)


125 lbs.: Mara Romero Borella vs. Taila Santos

Round 1: Borella takes her to the fence. Santos reverses, throws knees. She gets the outside trip and looks for mount. Now the back. Borella stands, fighting the choke. Santos loses her grip and they separate. Two minutes in. Borella shoots and puts her back on the fence. She completes the takedown into side control. Two minutes to go.

Borella lands an elbow, stands and tries to dive in with a punch. Half guard. She pins down an arm and lands elbows. One minute to go. Santos regains guard. Mission control attempt. Borella stands and looks to drop more punches. 10-9 Borella.

Round 2: Borella connects with a straight right and hauls her to the fence once again. She completes the takedown, can’t secure it. Knees to the body from Santos a minute in. She reverses. More knees. Two minutes in. Limited action on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Borella reverses in turn. They finally separate with a minute to go. 1-2 from Borella, body kicks from Santos. Borella tries to clinch, denied, tries again more successfully. Well that was terrible. 10-9 Borella?

Round 3: Some tentative exchanges at range. Borella ties up, denied. Borella low kick, Santos right hand. Borella catches a leg kick and grabs a front headlock a minute in. They separate. Jab and short cross land for Santos. Borella telegraphing her entries. Back to the slow kickboxing. Body kick from Santos, counter 3-2. Two minutes in. Borella with a counter right. Another off a Santos leg kick. Borella walks into a counter trying to tie up, eats jabs. 1s and 2s from Santos as she presses forward. Two minutes to go.

Borella circles off the fence. Shoots, stuffed. Again. Santos denies yet another takedown as the jabs pile up. One minute to go. Borella again denied on the clinch attempt and eats a right downstairs. Santos tries a spinning back fist. Counters landing, right hands upstairs. 10-9 Santos.

Final result: Borella def. Santos by split decision


170 lbs.: Thiago Alves vs. Max Griffin

Round 1: Alves lands a nasty leg kick to counter a jab. Griffin pressuring, eats another shot to the leg but rocks Alves with a punching flurry. Griffin opens up to the head and body, then looks for a takedown. They separate. Griffin firing his jab, lands a right downstairs. One minute in. Low kick from Alves. Clean right by Griffin. Another Alves leg kick met by a right hand. Again, to the inside this time. Alves catches a knee, can’t get the takedown. Two minutes in. Alves continuing to pick away at the leg every time Griffin steps in, but is taking punches. Griffin bangs the body and ties up. Good elbow on the break. Calf kick from Alves this time. Left hook connects. Two minutes to go.

1-2 from Griffin, low kick from Alves. They trade near the fence. 1-2-1 from Alves, last one connects. Lead right by Griffin, left hook from Alves. Body kick by the Brazilian and a glancing right. Griffin lands with a knee that strays low. One minute to go. Cross counter by Alves, knee by Griffin. 1-2 from Griffin. Alves steps in with an elbow, eats a body shot but lands a jab. Head kick lands with the foot. They trade to end the round and Alves falls from the onslaught. Saved by the bell. 10-9 Griffin.

Round 2: Low kick from Alves and a counter left hook. Jab exchange. Alves leg kick and a right hand as he eats a knee. Low kick lands. One minute in. Left hook from Griffin around the guard. Alves steps in with a body kick. Griffin tries a lead uppercut. Alves low kick. Two minutes in. Griffin slips throwing a kick and they trade on the fence. Another hard body kick from Alves and another and now they’re trading heat. Griffin’s unsteady on the fence as he throws back. They tie up. Two minutes to go.

Griffin looks for a takedown, can’t quite get it but gets Alves to a knee. Back to the feet. Uppercut and left hook from Griffin, who ties up again. Both land on the fence. Going at it once again. One minute to go. Huge right cross catches Griffin clean but he survives it. Alves still stalking. Overhand right connects. Leg kick. Big hook by Alves, who walks through a counter for another body kick. Alves throwing on the fence. 10-9 Alves.

Round 3: Alves marches in with a 1-2. More leg kicks. Right hand from Griffin. Body kick lands, left hook over the shoulder. Lead right connects and he ties up on the fence. Knee from Griffin a minute in. Alves fires a spinning elbow, only to get taken down into guard. Alves rises, eating a knee along the way. Griffin gets the body lock and moves into mount off the takedown. Two minutes in. Alves shrimps into half guard. He gets to his knees against the fence, gets his base pulled out. Griffin still attached at the waist. Two minutes to go.

Alves makes it to his feet. Griffin still looking for another takedown. Knee to the body. Alves escapes with 80 seconds to work. Griffin tries to clinch. Alves gets the waist lock, can’t get a takedown in return. He sits for a kimura attempt, uses it to sweep. 10-9 Griffin.

Final result: Alves def. Griffin by split decision


265 lbs.: Junior Albini vs. Jair Rozenstruik

Round 1: Trading inside low kicks to start. Albini shoots within 20 seconds and muscles Rozenstruik down into half guard. Good elbow. Albini trying to lock up a kimura. One minute in. Loses it, starts dropping elbows from side control instead. Knee on belly to mount. Rozenstruik regains half guard. Good scramble from Rozenstruik to get back up. Albini looks for a trip, can’t get it, lands another one right into back control. Rozenstruik reverses into guard. He stands and lets Albini up. Albini quickly connects with a lead right, backs him to the fence again. Two minutes to go.

Knee form Albini. They pause the fight for...reasons? I don’t know. They restart at range. Body kick and leg kick from Albini. He looks for a double-leg, can’t get it. They separate with 30 seconds to go. Left hook lands for Rozenstruik, who stuffs a takedown and lands a pair of hooks inside. Counter right and head kick attempt. 10-9 Albini.

Round 2: Low kick from Albini. They trade leg kicks. Combination from Rozenstruik and a right hand and head kick drops Albini. Rozenstruik swarms him for the finish against the fence.

Final result: Rozenstruik def. Albini by TKO (head kick and punches)


145 lbs.: Felipe Dias Colares vs. Geraldo de Freitas Jr.

Round 1: de Freitas flicking out kicks, lands a jab. Colares tries a jumping kick. Low kick exchange. Low kick and 3-2 from de Freitas land clean. One minute in. Left hook by de Freitas. Colares finds the mark with a 2-1, walks into a left hand and eats knees in the clinch. de Freitas bangs the body and lands a chopping right, only for COlares to heave him into the air for a takedown. Colares looks for the back, loses position. de Freitas on top in side control two minutes in. Colares stands, uses a whizzer to take him down in return. Colares on top in guard. de Feiras scrambles up for his own takedown, lands short punches. Colares stands, still pressed against the fence with two minutes to go.

de Freitas denies a hip toss for a double-leg into half guard. Colares trying to scoot free without success. Half guard to side control. de Freitas stepping over for a kimura, loses it in transition. Colares lands a hard elbow from on top. 10-9 de Freitas.

Round 2: Right hand and head kick from de Freitas. 1-1-2-3. Brutal 3-2 and he’s on the attack. Colares ties up, takes a knee to the body. de Freitas reverses and looks for a takedown a minute in. He lands on top in half guard. Full mount now. Nice hammerfist as he moves to the back. Both hooks in. Good balance from de Freitas as Colares tries to wriggle free. Colares manages to slip out and take top position. de Freitas threatens a triangle, nothing doing. Colares with some good top control of his own. Two minutes to go.

Colares looking for the back, loses position. de Freitas going for a takedown. One minute to go. de Freitas completes a double-leg, maintains a body lock as Colares stands. They separate. Head kick from Colares. Glancing right hand lands but he succumbs to a blast double. 10-9 de Freitas.

Round 3: They open the round swinging big until de Freitas catches a kick for a takedown. Colares returns to his feet. One minute in. Colares tries the drop seoi nage but he doesn’t have enough left. de Freitas lands some heavy blows on the feet in return. Brutal punches and a blast double into half guard. He swiftly passes to full mount, then looks for the back. He maintains a body lock as Colares stands. Two minutes to go.

Left hook, uppercut, left hook, blast double from de Freitas. Side control. Colares gets to his feet and grabs the rear waist lock. One minute to go. de Freitas looks for the switch. Sneaky knee from Colares and they slug it out until the bell. 10-9 de Freitas.

Final result: de Freitas def. Colares by unanimous decision


135 lbs.: Said Nurmagomedov vs. Ricardo Ramos

Round 1: Low kicks from Nurmagomedov to start. Head kick attempt. Another heavy low kick. Ramos tries a spinning back kick, eats a spinning back fist. Spinning back kick connects for Nurmagomedov a minute in. Ramos tries a spinning elbow, falls short, eats a body kick. Nurmagomedov looks for a wheel kick. Another leg kick spins Ramos around. Spinning back fist glances off. Two minutes in. He whiffs on a punching combo, then lands a spinning back kick that folds Ramos. Ramos staggers back and wilts to his knees under the resulting onslaught.

Final result: Nurmagomedov def. Ramos by TKO (spinning back kick and punches)


125 lbs.: Magomed Bibulatov vs. Rogerio Bontorin

Round 1: Bibulatov advancing early. Bontorin counters a low kick. Body kick and spinning back fist attempt from Bibulatov. Another body kick prompts Bontorin to tie up. Lovely throw from Bibulatov into guard. Bontorin setting up an omoplata, gets clocked with a right but gets to his feet. Bibulatov tries a wheel kick. 1-2 counters a Bontorin leg kick. Bontorin buzzes him with a right hand in combination. Two minutes in. Bibulatov catches a body kick for a throw, but Bontorin immediately sweeps to the back. Looking for the choke. Bibulatov fighting off the hands, taking some short blows. Two minutes to go.

Bontorin worms his forearm under the chin, but Bibulatov manages to spin, landing on the bottom in guard. Quick scramble and Bibulatov tries a spinning back kick. One minute to go. Bontorin whiffs on an overhand left, eats a punch and kick to the body. Left hand from Bontorin in response. Bibulatov continues to rip the body. Bontorin with a knee inside, fights off a foot sweep. They fight in the clinch. 10-9 Bontorin.

Round 2: Bibulatov keeping up the pressure, looks to spin again. Back to the clinch. Bibulatov tries to change levels. Bontorin gets him against the fence, loses hold of him. One minute in. Bibulatov slings a lead right and they trade knees in the clinch. Bibulatov looking for a takedown on the cage, can’t get it and is warned for grabbing the shorts. Bibulatov with a spinning back fist and front kick. Lead left lands for Bontorin. Two minutes in. Bibulatov tries a hook kick, eats a straight left. Another hard right and side kick downstairs. Lead right. Bontorin whiffs on a pair of hooks. Clean overhand left by Bontorin. 1-2. Two minutes to go.

Spinning back kick to the midsection and a straight right from Bibulatov, then a jumping knee attempt as Bontorin looked for the body. Pressing Bontorin on the fence and takes him down into guard. Bontorin scrambles up with a minute to go. Bibulatov lands a hook kick, gets clocked with a 3-2. Bibulatov to the body, avoids a flying kick. Bontorin shoots from too far out, eats a clean uppercut. Bibulatov tries a spinning kick to the face. 10-9 Bibulatov.

Round 3: Bibulatov looks the fresher of the two, still slinging heat. Bontorin looks for a straight left. Bibulatov to the body. One minute in. Bibulatov tries to spin, lands a side kick and counters a body shot with a left hook. Step-in knee. Bontorin blasts him with a 3-2. Bibulatov comes back with a body shot. Two more big punches from Bontorin, who takes a right to the gut again. Two minutes in. Head kick from Bibulatov. Straight right and body shot, then a spinning back kick downstairs. Bontorin is slugging with him but it’s the Russian getting the better of it. He pressures with punches and looks for a takedown on the fence. Bontorin defending so far. Two minutes to go.

Trading knees inside. Bontorin lands one to the head. Chopping right connects for him. They separate and both land clean crosses. Bibulatov shoots, denied, pressed against the fence. He separates with a minute to go. Bontorin rips a counter right downstairs and counters a takedown with a throw from the whizzer, putting in a hook and looking for the back. Bibulatov survives the choke attempt. 10-9 Bibulatov on superior striking.

Final result: Bontorin def. Bibulatov by split decision
