I’m sure Kamaru Usman is bummed, but on the bright side, he got his “show” purse and a free trip to “Big D” ahead of the UFC 228 pay-per-view (PPV) event, held this Saturday night (Sept. 8, 2018) inside American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.
“The Nigerian Nightmare” was an insurance policy for the Tyron Woodley vs. Darren Till welterweight title fight, as “The Gorilla” struggled to make weight in recent appearances and the promotion didn't want to be scrambling at the last minute to save a title fight.
I guess they should have taken out an insurance policy for Nicco Montano, as well, since the women’s flyweight champion was hospitalized ahead of the UFC 228 weigh ins, putting her Valentina Shevchenko championship showdown in serious jeopardy.
As for Woodley and Till, there won’t be any asterisks attached to tomorrow night’s headliner and the winner will walk away the undisputed champion. Whether or not that clears a path for Colby Covington remains to be seen, but I have to imagine Usman is right there in the mix.
We’ll worry about that on Sunday morning.
