Tom Hardy: ‘Venom’ character based on UFC star Conor McGregor

British actor Tom Hardy, perhaps best known for his roles as “Bane” in The Dark Knight Rises and “Max” in Mad Max: Fury Road, is back on the silver screen next month as “Eddie Brock” in the superhero movie Venom, based on the character from Marvel’s Spider-Man comics.

And for inspiration, Hardy turned to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) headliner Conor McGregor, undoubtedly the world’s most popular mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, because “Notorious” is always down for a “scrap.”

“He was definitely a key note but I don’t know if you’d recognize him in the portrayal, it was more of an interior choice, if that makes sense,” Hardy told RTE. “There was an aspect the studio wanted somebody who could fight, which they always do in these sort of hero movies. They want somebody who can have a scrap. Conor obviously wants to have a scrap with everybody, so that’s useful.”

One person he will definitely have a scrap with is reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov when they collide in the UFC 229 pay-per-view (PPV) main event (details), set for Sat., Oct. 6, 2018 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Venom opens the day before (Oct. 5) and will face competition from A Star Is Born, a romantic drama that is actually a remake of a 1976 Barbara Streisand movie that I didn't watch because I was three years old at the time.
