Let’s face it, Darren Till was not the promotion’s first choice when it came to welterweight title contenders. Not only did he miss weight in his last fight — badly — he also took a backseat to interim titleholder Colby Covington.
But “Chaos” was unprepared when matchmakers asked him to fight Tyron Woodley in the UFC 228 pay-per-view (PPV) main event, which takes place next month in Dallas, Texas, and only 30-percent of Kamaru Usman was able to show up on Sept. 8.
That left Till, currently ranked No. 2 in the division, to fill the slot.
Maybe that’s why UFC is putting some extra muscle behind the Liverpool native’s pre-fight promotion. Or, perhaps Dana White & Co. just hate Woodley. Let’s take a quick look at how “The Chosen One” has been treated in recent years.
—Publicly humiliated by UFC after winning the title
—Named the “worst-treated champion in UFC history”
—Drew the scorn of UFC fans based on the color of his skin
—Constantly demoted by UFC President Dana White
There was also something about tomato throwing, but I’m not sure that’s relevant here.
UFC also made Woodley look like a member of the Lollipop Guild with the official UFC 228 poster (see it here). So what does all of this mean? Nothing, but would you rather have this ... or more stories about Ronda Rousey winning make-believe titles?
