It was announced earlier tonight (Fri., July 6, 2018) during the broadcast for TUF 27 Finale that UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will defend his title against Kelvin Gastelum later this year at an event to be determined.
Prior to their 185-pound title fight, Whittaker and Gastelum will coach opposite one another on the 28th season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). The season will be called “Heavy Hitters.”
While this could be the last installment of TUF, it’s more interesting to learn the news that Whittaker will defend his title against Gastelum. Some thought that former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman could be in the mix for a title shot, but it looks like Gastelum has worked out his “personal issues.”
Whittaker, who last defeated Yoel Romero at UFC 225 in a non-title fight rematch, will look to officially defend his 185-pound title for the very first time. Gastelum, who outpointed Ronaldo Souza back at UFC 224, will enter his first ever title fight.
It’s an interesting matchup to break down, but there’s plenty of time to do it.
