Dustin Ortiz added his name to the flyweight title discussion earlier tonight (Sat., July 28, 2018) at UFC on FOX 30 from inside Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, after putting an end to fast-rising prospect Matheus Nicolau via first-round head kick knockout.
Nicolau caught Ortiz with a huge right hand counter early but Ortiz remained confident in his standup. Out of nowhere, the flyweight veteran threw up a perfectly-timed head kick that sneaked in between Nicolau’s blocking hands and sent the Brazilian to the canvas. Ortiz followed up with precise ground-and-pound before the referee stepped in for the knockout stoppage.

With this performance, Ortiz locks down his third-straight win at 125 pounds and adds another knockout to his resume after finishing Hector Sandoval in a flyweight-record 15 seconds last August. The 29-year-old is on the short list of deserving title contenders and is undoubtedly one more victory away from his first UFC title shot.
