Light heavyweight legend Mauricio “Shogun” Rua faced Anthony “Lionheart” Smith today (Sunday, July 22, 2018) inside Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany, live and free on Fox Sports 1. It would be Anthony Smith who would cement his status as a legend-killer by stopping Shogun in the first round.
Mauricio took the center of the cage. He countered a jab with a low kick and Smith threw a low kick back. They both threw and Shogun narrowly whiffed a big overhand. Smith landed a check hook, and moments later, a huge front kick to the face! He rocked Shogun with a combination and walked forward, unleashing punches on a shelled-up Shogun! The referee stepped in just as Shogun’s legs buckled. Good stoppage, excellent victory for Anthony Smith, who ends a three-fight win streak for the veteran Shogun Rua. Rua, on the other hand, was crestfallen after getting caught and finished that early.
Anthony Smith called out Gustafsson, who needs a late-notice replacement at UFC 227. “I’ll see you in LA!” he shouted. That’s a great callout for Smith, who, after this win is perfectly placed to step up on short notice to face the Swede.
Official result: Anthony Smith def. Mauricio Rua via TKO at 1:29 of Round 1
