Mixed martial arts fans are no stranger to last minute injuries, but these days its the scale that seems to be the biggest enemy of fighters making it into the cage. We almost lost our UFC 225 main event between Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero because Romero was .2 of a pound over, but fortunately everything has worked out. Yoel Romero is no longer eligible to win the middleweight strap, but the fight will go on for five full rounds at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
The whole thing is a bad look for the UFC and Romero. Yoel becomes the first fighter in UFC history to miss weight for multiple title shots - he missed weight at UFC 221 for an interim middleweight fight against Luke Rockhold earlier this year. The UFC probably shouldn’t have let someone unable to make 185 fight for the title, but they did and now they’re reaping the rewards of that decision.
It’s all explained above in this exclusive SBNation video that walks you though the latest weigh-in debacle to hit the UFC.
