Here’s Jorge Masvidal’s expletive laden response to Leon Edwards’ UFC Singapore call out

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Singapore-Cerrone vs Edwards Paul Miller-USA TODAY Sports

Leon Edwards came into his UFC Singapore fight with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on a five fight win streak. And while that’s a pretty impressive stat on its own, there’s no doubt Leon will get a serious legitimacy boost after adding a big name scalp like Cerrone’s to his collection. That same legitimacy led the UFC to give Darren Till a hard promotional push in his hometown of Liverpool. So if you’re Edwards, why not see if the UFC will do something similar for you?

Following the fight, Edwards called out Jorge Masvidal, currently sitting at #9 on the UFC welterweight rankings. He also floated the idea of making that fight the main event in a return to Birmingham UK, Edwards’ hometown.

“Masvidal, he’s been around a long time, so why not go in there and take him out?” Edwards said. “To bring the UFC back to Birmingham as well, headline billing me and him, have Tom Breese and my brother Fabian on the bill. It would be amazing.”

Unfortunately for Edwards, the decision win we witnessed in Singapore isn’t going to generate the kind of hype we saw after Till’s first round knockout of “Cowboy”. Without that hype, the UFC isn’t likely to shuffle the schedule to set up a Leon Edwards Birmingham spectacular. But on the plus side, Jorge Masvidal sounds open to the idea regardless of where the fight might place.

“F**king people are always calling me out,” Masvidal told MMAjunkie. “I don’t give two s**ts who calls me out. I just want a big fight. If Leon is the biggest fight that I can get my hands on, meaning the biggest name and biggest ranking, then that’s who it is.”

“The bigger the names, the better,” he continued. “At this stage in my career, I only want top 10 guys, or the closest thing to get me to the title. I don’t think Leon Edwards is quite there, but it’s a fight, and it’s competition. The guy’s obviously skilled and on a big win streak, so it would be awesome to get the fight.”

Masvidal has been having a hard time securing opponents up the rankings, ironically because they subscribe to the same ‘Why fight lower ranked guys’ mindset he just voiced regarding #13 Edwards. But with few other options at the moment, he sounds willing to make an exception.

Masvidal said September sounded good to him. As for the location ... don’t hold your breath, Birmingham.
