Ranked light heavyweights Ovince St. Preux (No. 7) and Tyson Pedro (No. 13) met in the Octagon today (Sat., June 23, 2018) at UFC Fight Night 132 from inside the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, exclusively on UFC Fight Pass. Young prospect Pedro was looking to work his way up the rankings; he was riding a one-fight winning streak after his first loss to Ilir Latifi. “OSP”, meanwhile, was looking to bounce back, his own three-fight winning streak having been snapped by the same Latifi. He wouldn’t score his signature Von Flue choke, but did get another unusual submission, the rare straight armbar from side control.
Pedro came out hot, connecting on two high kicks early. He knocked OSP down with a right straight off the second high kick and went for a tight guillotine, the same submission Latifi used to finish Saint Preux This time OSP worked his way out of it, landing a hip toss from the clinch. Pedro worked his way back to the feet and tied OSP up, looking to trip him to the canvas. Pedro really committed to a throw attempt but shouldn’t have, as he ended up on the bottom. Saint Preux landed a couple heavy shots, moved to side control, and locked up a kimura. Pedro tried to defend by straightening his arm out, but OSP turned it into a straight armbar and Pedro had no choice but to tap. Dramatic comeback finish for Ovince St. Preux!
In the post-fight interview, OSP said that if he gets on top, you’re in trouble, and he said if he gets his arms locked around your arm from the top, he can finish anyone. He wasn’t down on Pedro’s prospects; at a thin light heavyweight, there is no reason to think Pedro won’t work his way back up the rankings. Saint Preux also said there isn’t anyone who has been more active than him; he will fight anyone anywhere.
Official result: Ovince St. Preux def. Tyson Pedro via submission (armbar) at 2:51 of Round 1
