When they first announced Creed, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes and think it was Sylvester Stallone — realizing he was too old to box — trying to milk the Rocky franchise for a few more years.
While that may still be true, headliner Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler elevated the material and made a pretty remarkable movie. So, based on its critical and commercial success, it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel.
And the first trailer dropped today.
The film will feature Ivan Drago’s son, Viktor, and Creed’s desire to get revenge for the death of his father, Apollo, who was crushed in Rocky IV, a flick responsible for such memorable quotes as “Throw the damn towel!” and “If he dies, he dies.”
When a casting call was announced for the role of Viktor Drago, there was some talk of UFC welterweight Sage Northcutt landing the role, as “Super” has a very Drago-esque look, but probably was’t big enough.
The shredded Northcutt stands just 6’0” — roughly the same as Jordan — but is perhaps not as imposing as Romanian boxer Florian Munteanu, who towers over both of them at 6’4” and just so happens to be built like a brick shithouse.
