This kind of shit used to fly in PRIDE FC, where you could literally have a one-legged mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter boxing that weird salad-tossing robot from Chowbotics in a mixed-rules bout in front of 90,000 fans at Saitama Super Arena.
But alas, there is a reason those spectacles went the way fo the Dodo bird.
Not that it stopped Fires Zahabi from trying to resurrect them. His latest master plan has star pupil and former two-division champion, Georges St-Pierre, returning to combat sports to face the much smaller (and much older) Floyd Mayweather. Not coincidentally, that bout would make a shitload of money and Zahabi would get a percentage.
But let him give you the other reason, by way of Joe Rogan’s podcast (via MMA Junkie):
“I want Georges to fight Mayweather. I keep bothering Georges, ‘You fight Mayweather. You fight him.’ He’s like, ‘It’s crazy.’ I know it’s crazy. They’ll fight at a catchweight. Do you think Mayweather is worried that he’s going to be concussed? He’s fought all the top punchers in the world. He’s just going to have to worry about Georges’ volume and reach, but he can handle himself, and Georges can handle himself. But the whole world is going to tune into that one.”
I wish articles came with laugh tracks.
Mayweather, as you’re well aware, already did the “box a UFC fighter” thing when he finished Conor McGregor last August. “Money” was expected to make his Octagon debut in 2018, but apparently got tired of trolling the MMA media and quietly faded away.
As for St-Pierre, he hasn’t been heard from since retiring from UFC earlier this year, which required him to surrender his 185-pound strap. In his place, Robert Whittaker took over the division and recently defended his belt against middleweight bruiser Yoel Romero.
Who may do some crossing over of his own.
