Bantamweight contenders Jimmie Rivera and Marlon Moraes threw down tonight (June 1, 2018) live from the Adirondack Bank Arena in Utica, NY, live and free on Fox Sports 1. At stake was a possible title shot opposite the winner of Cody Garbrandt vs. TJ Dillashaw 2. Jimmie Rivera is the dark-horse contender at bantamweight, riding an insane 20-fight winning streak. Moraes was the WSOF bantamweight champion, and had won his last two.
There was no glove touch, as there was considerable heat in the buildup between the two men. Moraes opened with a leg kick. He knocked Rivera down with a head kick out of nowhere! Rivera tried to recover, but Moraes was landing shots as he turtled and the referee stepped in! What a finish! Moraes ended Rivera out of nowhere. Jimmie looked disappointed, his 20-fight streak ended in less than a minute. It was a lead-leg switchkick that put him down, just thirty three seconds in.
Moraes dedicates the fight to his unborn son, saying he is very happy with this moment. He shouts out his team, and says he wants to fight for the UFC bantamweight title. He said he started training kickboxing at 9 years old, and credited coach Mark Henry for putting his punches and kicks together. His wife was watching via smartphone.
Official result: Marlon Moraes def. Jimmie Rivera via TKO (head kick) at :33 of Round 1
