Women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano has been largely absent from the UFC since winning her belt back in December of 2017. Word from her camp and the UFC had her dealing with a laundry list of injuries and illnesses. But we got hope that the fledgling 125 pound division would finally move forward when Montano announced she was ready to fight at UFC 228 against #1 contender Valentina “Bullet” Shevchenko.
”Alright, let’s get this show on the road!” Montano wrote on Instagram. “What you got on your girl, Sept 8th in Vegas, Valentina! Now that I’m finally back to a healthy body I’m ready to go, it was only a matter of time!”
That sure sounded like a fight announcement at first blush, but according to Shevchenko there’s one problem: Montano still hasn’t signed the contract.
”Hey Nicco, finally!” she wrote. “Sign the fight agreement first. You changed your word once already. No trust before I will see the paper from you.”
Is Montano the latest champion to try and make her plans a reality by announcing them before the UFC agrees, or is this just the latest bit of brinkmanship from Shevchenko, who has been pushing Montano non-stop for a fight since destroying her last opponent in February?
Whatever the case, let’s just hope a fight comes together and soon. With the belt out of play since being issued, the division is in serious danger of stalling out before it even gets started.
