Reigning UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker outlasted Cuban tank Yoel Romero last night (Sat., June 9, 2018) at UFC 225 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside United Center in Chicago, Illinois, to the tune of a split-decision win.
This fight was a barn burner. Both men delivered significant damage throughout all five rounds. Whittaker began his onslaught with kicks to Romero’s lead leg. Punches by the champion eventually closed up Romero’s right eye. Whittaker added ferocious elbows in the clinch, but suffered a broken right hand early.
“Soldier of God” battled back in the second half of the fight. He knocked Whittaker down in the fourth and fifth rounds, stunning the champion and stiffening him on the feet. Romero’s shots did serious damage, but he just wasn’t able to put “Bobby Knuckles” away.
In the end, it was Whittaker’s output and invincible chin that played the biggest roles in this fight. Some could argue that Romero did enough to win the bout, but it didn’t turn out that way.

With this performance, Whittaker locks down his second-straight win over Romero and remains perfect at 185 pounds. The champion wasn’t going to relinquish his title tonight even if he lost, but he still wanted come out on top.
A trilogy could be in the works, but Kelvin Gastelum seems like a good bet to take on Whittaker next.
