Midnight Mania! Darren Till blasts partner in sparring ahead of main event vs. Stephen Thompson

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Gdansk-Cerrone vs Till Per Haljestam-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Exciting welterweight prospect Darren Till is set for a highly anticipated main event bout against number one contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, to take place in Liverpool, Till’s hometown. The bout headlines UFC Fight Night 130 inside Echo Arena on May 27, 2018. The card will air on FOX Sports 1 with “Prelims” on UFC Fight Pass.

The Scouser (as Liverpool natives are often called) is pulling no punches in sparring ahead of a fight that could very well determine the best striker in the 170-lb. division. Here he lights up his sparring partner, knocking him down and landing some vicious body shots in combination against the cage. The brief footage could indicate that his strategy for the Thompson fight involves getting Thompson into tight spaces against the cage and unleashing combinations, or it could just indicate Till is anticipating a hard-fought bout — though Thompson has said he doesn’t think Till is all that impressive upon scouting him.

Till going this hard on his sparring partner drew comments from fellow UFC fighters, with Marc Diakese remarking, “How much did he get paid?” and Mike Perry saying “Get buddy a headgear or something got damn”

This is why you should follow MMA Mania on Twitter. We explain things.

The new ESPN+ deal sparked speculation on both how much more the UFC will be making (a lot) and how many events will be run. Oversaturation is commonly blamed for a decline in baseline UFC viewership.

It also prompted a comparison to other sports with Collectively Bargained Agreements, where the athletes saw their wages rise in response to the greater revenue. The UFC fighters currently receive around 17% of UFC revenue, a figure which will likely fall in proportion to this new influx of revenue.

This wedding went downhill fast.

Cormier started off throwing some trash talk Stipe Miocic’s way and ended up roasting some trolls.

Even when a fan brought up his crying face after the second Jones fight, DC wasn’t too worried- after all, he did make 4 million dollars from that fight.

Mike Perry training at Jackson-Winklejohn has to be a memorable experience for all concerned.

I’m not hating this proposed fight between Nate Diaz and Georges St. Pierre- sure, GSP ought to win it running away, but it gets both men back in the cage when we probably wouldn’t see either one otherwise.

Rockhold vs. Gustafsson would be fun, but I’m thankful that I won’t have to deal with the farce of another interim title. Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier 2 needs to happen as well.

  • Junior Dos Santos has an understandably sour taste in his mouth after getting aquitted by USADA but losing out on a portion of his career before he was able to prove his innocence. He’s right that something’s gotta change under that regime, because fighters like JDS, Josh Barnett, Lyoto Machida, and Tim Means are losing paydays during what are often very limited athletic opportunities to make money prizefighting.
