Kamaru Usman has rapidly climbed the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) ranks as a top Welterweight contender, going a perfect 7-0 inside the Octagon and scoring wins over the likes of Leon Edwards and Emil Meek Weber.
According to “The Nigerian Nightmare,” his dominance inside the cage has forced other contenders to look the other way when presented a fight against him. Santiago Ponzinibbio, though, answered his call and accepted a fight against him at this weekend’s (Sat., May 19, 2018) UFC Fight Night 129 event in Santiago, Chile.
Unfortunately, Ponzinibbio was forced out of the event with an injury, paving the way for former two-time title contender Demian Maia to step in to fill the void. In the end, it seems Kamaru got the man he wanted all along, as he has been calling for a fight against the submission expert for a while now. If he can manage to take out the longtime veteran, Usman will likely be on the fast track to a shot at the title.
Before then, take a look at Usman’s utter destruction of Sergio Moraes last September in UFC’s “KO of the Week.” And to see who else is fighting at UFC Fight Night 129: “Maia vs Usman” click here.
