When Volkan Oezdemir steps into the cage to face Mauricio Rua in the main event of UFC Fight Night 134 on Sun., July 22, 2018 inside Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany (details), he’ll be facing a combatant he looked up to as he climbed the ranks.
It’s an opportunity “No Time” says he’s grateful for, as “Shogun” is one of the most seasoned veterans in the game today after making a name for himself in the PRIDE FC ring, and then further adding to his legacy inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Octagon.
But Oezdemir has a legacy to create of his own, which is why he issued a friendly and respectful warning to the Brazilian bomber.
Rua, the former UFC Light Heavyweight champion of the world, has built quite a streak for himself, winning three in a row over the last two years — but he hasn’t competed since knocking out Gian Villante over a year ago.
Rua and Volkan were originally set to do the dance at the UFC Fight Night 129 event on May 19, 2018 in Santiago, Chile, before Oezdemir’s legal troubles forced a rescheduling of their 205-pound bout.
Volkan was last seen coming up short in his bid to dethrone current division champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 220 earlier this year. A win over Rua will definitely give him a big boost in his quest to get back to the big dance, while “Shogun” could very well surprise everyone in the fight world and find himself staring down the barrel of a title fight should he collect his fourth win in a row almost seven years after coughing up the strap to Jon Jones.
Oezdemir, though, has “No Time” for that.
