Eddie Alvarez isn’t too high on a rematch against Dustin Poirier after their initial fight at UFC 211 last May resulted in a no contest, one that had both men telling their side of the tale as to who was to blame for the controversial finish.
But it seems Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is leaning toward booking a rematch between the two surging Lightweights to potentially headline the upcoming UFC on FOX 30 mixed martial arts (MMA) event inside Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 28, 2018.
Veteran MMA reporter Brett Okamoto has the scoop:
Not official, but I'm hearing UFC is interested in doing the Alvarez/Poirier rematch in Calgary on July 28. That's a heck of a main event if it comes together.— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) May 1, 2018
Regarding potential Alvarez/Poirier 2 on July 28, I'm told Poirier is open to it, in fact it might be the only non-title fight he'd be open to this summer. The question is Alvarez's UFC contract. He's on last fight of deal, expected to talk seriously with UFC in next week or two.— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) May 1, 2018
Of course, “The Underground King” and “The Diamond” have both expressed their desire to face current UFC Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov next, but it seems they'll have to take a back seat to Conor McGregor when he comes back.
Until then, it only makes sense to have Eddie and Dustin — who is fresh off a knockout win over Justin Gaethje — run it back to declare the next man up in lightweight title picture. Plus, it gives them an opportunity to finally put their bitter beef to bed.
UFC on FOX 30 currently features a co-main event bout that will see Featherweight heavy hitters Jose Aldo and Jeremy Stephens go toe-to-toe. The promotion was eyeing a main event bout between women’s Flyweight champion Nicco Montano and Valentina Shevchenko, but it seems Nicco’s health issues won’t allow her to make the proposed date.
