And it just keeps getting worse by the minute.
Michael Chiesa has been forced out of his scheduled Lightweight showdown against former division champion Anthony Pettis, which was set to go down on the main card portion of this Saturday night’s (April 7, 2018) UFC 223 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Brooklyn, N.Y.
“Maverick” was one of the innocent victims caught in the crossfire of the horrific incident that occurred earlier today in Brooklyn after Conor McGregor threw a dolly through a window of a bus transporting various fighters from their media day obligations (see it). Unfortunately for Chiesa, he was sitting at the very front of the bus and was hit by flying glass, which caused multiple lacerations to his face
But that’s not all. Ray Borg, who was sitting next to “Maverick” and was also hit with flying glass in his eyes, will not be able to compete against Brandon Moreno.
Per sources, Chiesa/Pettis and Borg/Moreno are both off. Chiesa’s facial cuts, and his weight cut was thrown off. Borg started to experience problems with his eye, from the particles of glass.— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) April 6, 2018
Chiesa took to social media to announce the decision made by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).
A decision was made by the New York State Athletic Commission to pull me from UFC 223. I’m devastated to say the least. @Showtimepettis I hope to run this match up ASAP, June 9th in your backyard. That’s all I have to say for now. Much love.— Michael Chiesa (@MikeMav22) April 6, 2018
While it’s safe to assume UFC will compensate “Maverick” and Borg for their troubles, you can bet they would rather be competing this Saturday night instead of sitting on the sidelines. Also affected is Pettis and Moreno, who no longer have fights to look forward to, which could very well cost them a potential “win” and “Fight Night” bonuses.
Earlier today, UFC president Dana White revealed that Artem Lobov was pulled from his fight against Alex Caceres for his involvement in the madness.
Furthermore, UFC Vice President of Athlete Development Reed Harris also revealed that one of his co-workers suffered a broken hand in the melee, and many in the bus feared for their lives. As for McGregor, he is still on the run and has not been located by local law enforcement.
Once he is eventually in the hands of local police, you can bet it won’t go too well for the fiery Irishman, who also has to worry about plenty of lawsuits coming his way.
UFC 223 will feature a Lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway, while Rose Namajunas defends her women’s Strawweight title against Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
