The first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s flyweight title defense is currently in the works, as MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reports that the promotion is targeting Nicco Montano (4-2) vs. Valentina Shevchenko (15-3) for UFC on FOX 30 on July 28 from inside Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The UFC’s long-awaited return to Calgary is officially official. No main event announced, though I’m told the hope is to book Nicco Montaño vs. Valentina Shevchenko for the women’s flyweight title in that spot. Not finalized yet but that’s what they want. https://t.co/yEN7el8vYZ— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) April 27, 2018
Montano, 29, captured the UFC’s inaugural women’s 125-pound title this past December with a five-round beatdown of veteran Roxanne Modafferi at Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale. The former King of the Cage flyweight champion looked really good against “Happy Warrior,” along with her stint on Ultimate Fighter, but she’s going to have to show fight fans a lot more against a proven contender like Shevchenko if she’s going to hold onto her newly acquired UFC title for much longer.
Shevchenko, 30, earned her flyweight stripes with a debut victory over Brazilian prospect Priscila Cachoeira this past February at UFC Fight Night 125. The former bantamweight title challenger nearly defeated current 135-pound queen Amanda Nunes back at UFC 215, but lost a very narrow split decision. Many people believe “Bullet” was tailor-made to reign supreme over the UFC women’s flyweight division, so her performance opposite Montano (should the two actually meet) will be held under a bright microscope.
UFC on FOX 30 will feature a co-main event clash between former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and surging contender Jeremy Stephens.
