UFC ‘Chile’ fight card gets totally screwed

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Lewis vs Browne Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

If you planned on attending UFC Fight Night 129 on May 19 from inside Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile, you may want to rethink your decision.

Not only has MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani confirmed a report by Combate that welterweight contender Santiago Ponzinibbio has been removed from his main event clash with divisional powerhouse Kamaru Usman due to injury, but he has also confirmed a previous report by Combate that a co-main event matchup between former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua and Volkan Oezdemir has been scrapped due to legal issues for “No Time.”

While the promotion is scrambling to find a replacement welterweight to step in and fight Usman on less than four weeks notice, it’s going to be a big drop off nonetheless. Ponzinibbio has won his last six Octagon appearances and is regarded as one of the best power punchers in the division.

As for Oezdemir vs. Rua, reports are surfacing that UFC is looking to reschedule that fight for a later date. But with Oezdemir currently unable to leave the country as he fights off a felony charge, the promotion’s options may be limited.

This is crushing news for a UFC Chile card that was gearing up for some big action. For now, we’ll have to hang our heads low. Real low.
