UFC Atlantic City: Frankie Edgar ‘hungry’ to prove he’s still one of the best against Cub Swanson

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar was knocked out by Brian Ortega at UFC 222 earlier this year, the first time “The Answer” has ever been finished in a fight.

While suffering your first-ever stoppage loss may sting your pride for a little bit, it hasn’t done much to rattle the confidence of the featherweight contender. And if you think Edgar is on a decline following the defeat, his upcoming fight against Cub Swanson at this weekend’s (Sat., April 21, 2018) UFC Fight Night 128 event in Atlantic City, New Jersey is just for you.

“Everyone changes from fight to fight and when you’ve got some miles on you, you’re gonna change even more,” Edgar said in an interview with UFC.com. “I think he (Swanson) is gonna come in more motivated. Maybe he sees some weakness there he needs to exploit, but he’s gonna realize that I’m the same guy,” said Edgar, before proclaiming his hunger and desire to be the best hasn’t wavered.

“I’m still motivated, I’m still hungry. I know I had that loss, but it wasn’t like I was getting beat up or anything; I felt I was doing really well in that fight. He (Ortega) caught me with a shot I didn’t see, rocked me pretty good, and that’s just the way it goes,” he added. “But I’m going out there to prove I’m still the best in this division, or at least one of them.”

The loss to Ortega was only Edgar’s second in the last five years, proving that at 36 years of age and after 13 years in the hurt business as a pro, he’s still capable of competing at the highest level.

Getting a second win over an equally-determined Swanson is far from a lock, though.

UFC Fight Night 128: “Barboza vs. Lee” will feature a Lightweight scrap between fearsome striker Edson Barboza and former title contender Kevin Lee. To see who else is competing at the FOX Sports 1-televised event click here.
