Welterweight veteran Carlos Condit gave it one more go tonight (Sat., April 14, 2018) at UFC on Fox 29, broadcast live from inside Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, against the Brazilian Cowboy, Alex Oliveira. Condit, after a sabbatical from mixed martial arts (MMA), had lost a lackluster decision against Neil Magny; he had been booked against fellow veteran Matt Brown, but Brown had been forced to withdraw due to injury, with Oliveira stepping up on short notice. The Brazilian was coming off a ridiculously exciting third-round TKO loss to the Hawaiian banger Yancy Medeiros, while Condit was looking to turn around a 2-6 record since his controversial win over Nick Diaz in 2012.
Oliveira came out bouncing, light on his feet, changing stances and threw a body kick. He landed a big right hand early. Condit landed an inside leg kick. Condit tried to chase him down, but when he got too close Oliveira clinched and landed a takedown, putting Condit on his back in half guard. He moved from control to posturing up and landing ground-and-pound. Condit scrambled, got a double-leg of his own. He got to half guard and began landing elbows and punches from the top. Oliveira tried to power out from the bottom and Condit kept piling up the offense. When Oliveira tried to explode again, Condit took his back and tried to lock in a rear-naked choke. With 10 seconds to go, Oliveira fended off the choke attempt and survived until the end of the round.
Oliveira dipped into a high kick and ran through it to put Condit on his back. He landed a couple hard punches, postured and ate an upkick from Condit. Condit scrambled up and Oliveira threw hooks into the clinch, putting Condit on his back once more. Condit scrambled and got that double-leg again from his knees, and with Oliveira landing punches to his body, drove through to put the Brazilian flat on his back. Condit landed a couple slicing elbows. He stood to try to pass the guard, Oliveira landed an upkick in a scramble, got back up and as Condit shot back in, got a very tight guillotine attempt standing. Condit tried to wait it out, fell sideways, but Oliveira held onto it and eventually tapped out Carlos Condit! What a wild scrap, excellent win for the Brazilian Cowboy on short notice.
Official result: Alex Oliveira def Carlos Condit via submission (guillotine choke) at 3:17 of Round 2
