Raphael Assuncao vs. Rob Font booked for UFC 226 in Las Vegas

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Norfolk-Assuncao vs Lopez Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Two of the best bantamweights in the world will collide this summer at UFC 226 on July 7 from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as Brazilian veteran Raphael Assuncao meets rising contender Rob Font, per a recent report by the Las Vegas Journal-Review (which was later confirmed by MMA Fighting).

Assuncao, 35, has won his last three Octagon appearances and is coming off a Performance of the Night knockout over Matthew Lopez back at UFC Fight Night 120 this past November. The divisional staple has produced a 10-2 record since entering the promotion back in 2011 and continues his push towards his first UFC title shot. A decisive victory over a dangerous contender like Font could land Assuncao on the doorstep of a No. 1 contender’s bout later this year.

Font, 30, is not coming into this fight with a massive win streak, but he has finished all five of his UFC victories to date, including a recent TKO of Brazilian contender Thomas Almeida back at UFC 220. The Massachusetts native remains one of the best pure finishers at the bantamweight level and can finally make the divisional leap he’s been looking for with a win over a proven veteran like Assuncao.

UFC 226 will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight pitting current divisional champion Stipe Miocic against UFC light heavyweight titleholder Daniel Cormier.
