Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s featherweight champion, Cristiane Justino, was hoping to tangle with Megan Anderson at some point this year, because “Cyborg” likes to do crazy shit in her mixed martial arts (MMA) career.
Like defend her 145-pound title against an actual featherweight and not a puffed-up bantamweight. Insane, I know, and it was one of the reasons the Brazilian contemplated fighting for Bellator MMA.
Instead, the promotion will take Anderson and put her into a featherweight showdown opposite Holly Holm (details), who abandoned the bantamweight class for two 145-pound title shots, both of which ended in defeat.
“I’m not surprised,” Cyborg told FanSided. “I said this was going to happen months ago. It’s how the UFC works, the No. 1 contender is going to fight someone I already beat. The UFC knows Holly needs a couple wins so we can rematch. Right now her record is terrible. She’s in the negative.”
Anderson meets Holm at UFC 225 in June.
As for Justino, she’s going to have to wait for the winner of this fight, which promotion president Dana White insists is the match to make. Not that he has much choice, as UFC doesn’t have enough featherweights to include in the official rankings.
