Even though Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) took the weekend off, combat sports fans still had plenty to talk about around the proverbial water cooler this morning after everything that went down in both mixed martial arts (MMA) and boxing.
See why fight fans are flipping over this story.
The “sweet science” returned to HBO on Saturday night in London with the heavyweight showdown between Dillian Whyte and Lucas Browne. Not to suggest it was a mismatch, but it’s never a good sign when the commentators refer to one opponent as a “heavy bag” who was trotted to the ring for an “easy outing.”
Bloody Elbow breaks down the finish:
After just one fight in 2017, Browne made his return against Whyte and couldn’t have looked any worse. Whyte was by no means a huge favorite, but he was leagues above the 38-year-old Australian, and a knockout seemed inevitable. In round 6, that KO did materialize, as after landing a combination of punches against a slow, defensively unsound Browne, Whyte uncorked a wicked left hand that instantly put Browne to sleep. Sky Sports in the United Kingdom would not show a replay, as Browne was down for several minutes and had to be administered oxygen in the ring. He was later transferred to hospital for reasons that are obvious.
Sounds like he’s going to be okay (for now):
Hi everyone. Thanks very much for the love and support. It wasn’t my night and massive respect to @DillianWhyte for his performance. My eye was giving me trouble from the second and you can’t protect from what you can’t see. I’m all good and I will be back.

Browne also dabbled in MMA and sports a loss to current UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. “Big Daddy” is also known for a pair of failed drug tests to complement his knockout win over Ruslan Chagaev back in 2016.
Whyte improves to 23-1 with the win, while Lucas falls to 25-1 in defeat.
