Entertaining bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley’s injured foot from UFC 222 turned out to be not broken, which you’d think would be a good thing. But unfortunately for the rising UFC star, the fact that it wasn’t a simple bone issue actually complicated things quite a bit.
“What I understand is it would be better if it was broken because it would be easier to heal than ligament tears,” O’Malley said on a recent episode of The MMA Hour. “I think I would almost rather it would be broken, but we’re going to check it out and we’ll see where we can go from there.”
Since then, doctors decided where O’Malley should go is into surgery, which is exactly where the bantamweight ended up on Friday night.
”Out of surgery,” O’Malley wrote on Twitter shortly after his operation. “F**ked up and thankful there are people in this world smart enough to be able to cut open my foot and fix me so I can fight again!”
As it stands, there’s no set guarantee of when O’Malley could return but the UFC has offered him the main event of The Ultimate Fighter: Undefeated finale on July 6th in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s the day before the big UFC 226 showdown between champs Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier. Let’s hope the “Sugar Show” is ready to go by then!
