Professional wrestlers are the greatest salesmen (and women) in the world.
That’s because they’re forced to sell a fight that isn’t real, instead relying on manufactured drama with a pre-determined finish. Kind of like the boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.
A fight that was expertly promoted, according to WWE superstar John Cena, who insists McGregor was so good at convincing combat sports fans to shell out $100 for his “Money” bout, that similar tactics in pro wrestling would put everyone else out of business.
Cena included.
“He would do fantastic. Hell, he would put me out of work,” he said. “He gets the entertainment aspect of sport, and I think he gets it as good, or better, than anyone else. The way he promoted the fight against Mayweather... that’s what we do. He did it as good, or better, than us.”
Which explains this.
McGregor, who is expected to lose his lightweight title when the UFC 223 pay-per-view (PPV) gets underway next month in Brooklyn, New York, has flirted with pro wrestling before, to the point where promotion president Dana White had to call WWE head cheese Vince McMahon to confirm it.
There is no telling if or when McGregor will find his way back to UFC. Rumors have him landing somewhere in September, but that may depend on what sort of offer is being presented and whether or not it has equity attached.
