Video: Masked assailant who attacked Cris Cyborg at UFC 222 open workouts identified as BJ Penn

If your first thought was, “Hey, that’s Justin McCully!” -- then congratulations, you win the “I watch too much Bellator” merit badge.

While certainly a reasonable assumption, the man behind the mask was former UFC champion BJ Penn, who darted from the sidelines to tackle UFC 222 headliner Cris Cyborg while she was pounding pads.

I’m not sure what the purpose of their little skit was, other than to rip the mask off at the end — straight up Dr. Grimsley style — and reveal the bored Hawaiian, but it was good for mild amusement and a corresponding courtesy clap.

Bonus points if you were watching and thinking, “THAT’S GOTTA BE ... THAT’S GOTTA BE PENN! THAT’S GOTTA BE PENN!”

Cyborg defends her women’s featherweight title against Invicta FC import Yana Kunitskaya in the UFC 222 pay-per-view (PPV) main event, which takes place this Saturday night (March 3, 2018) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
