Welcome to Midnight Mania!
This column isn’t strictly MMA news.
You can usually find some of that down below, but my mandate is to bring you ‘the weird and wild from the world of MMA’, as the tagline says. In many cases, this... isn’t exactly news. This should be no surprise to you by now, but some days I feel the need to explain myself more than others, as if I’ve confessed to enjoying Jersey Shore. My other ready excuse, of course, is that you maniacs click on this stuff. In other words, you can blame yourselves for this.
Today, Sage Northcutt had himself a Twitter interaction with Irish superstar Conor McGregor, which just so happened to be on Northcutt’s 22nd birthday. It started with this mashup of Sage Northcutt’s face and body with McGregor’s tattoos.

As the absentee king of the lightweight division, who may or may not be officially deposed after UFC 223, McGregor’s reply was simply, “happy birthday kid.” Classic. Like Bruce Wayne wishing well to a young Dick Grayson.
Happy birthday kid. https://t.co/wlmpKE6SHT

The clincher, though, was Northcutt’s reply, in which he referred to Conor McGregor as “Mr. McGregor”. He might as well have thrown in a “gee golly” for good measure.
@TheNotoriousMMA Thanks Mr. McGregor! Can’t wait to see you fight again

Insomnia
Yes. John Dodson and Andrei Arlovski are an amazing duo.
So @UFC @DanaWhite can we have cameras following these 2 around and make a season outta it? Would make great Fight Pass original content. pic.twitter.com/oO8I3wlfoQ

Where does Derrick Lewis find this stuff... and what was this guy thinking??
Claudia Gadelha is training in Vegas
Using Daniel Cormier’s face to meme Jon Jones’ defense is peak MMA Internet.
Israel Adesanya got really real on Instagram.
Suga Sean O’Malley does indeed look exactly like Hyde. That’s uncanny. I always wondered if Hyde could fight.

Is Mike Perry considering a move to train at American Top Team? Here he tags their strength trainer Phil Daru and top coach Din Thomas.
Yo @DinThomas @DaruStrong I appreciate you guys. Once I’m on the road and back in the gym I’d definitely wanna stop down and see you guys

Chris Wade explains how the UFC often treats their athletes:
I missed this when it came out, but this is a pretty solid look at how a lot of UFC fighters end up doing business with the promotion for the bulk of their time there: https://t.co/k0UzzAqzAY

The “uber” tale of the tape for Brian Ortega vs. Frankie Edgar is interesting.
This weekend at #UFC222, "The Answer" returns in a tricky East Coast vs West Coast battle for Featherweight contendership.
— Fightnomics Reed (@Fightnomics) March 1, 2018
Edgar currently a slight favorite over Ortega: pic.twitter.com/WkFJ5fVLK9
Well that was intense.
The @SugaSeanMMA vs. @AndreSoukMMA stare down hot heated! pic.twitter.com/0d9IbRm8xP

Michael Chandler’s lift-jumps are your new workout goals.
Only in Japan.
Matt Brown and innovation at it’s finest.
Frankie Edgar’s coach explains all
So why didn't @thenotoriousmma vs. @FrankieEdgar come to fruition? Edgar's coach @MarkCoachmark13 explains! #UFC222 pic.twitter.com/M2zsPJ8HP6

I love the tricky rhythm of good striking
Attack when the opponent least expects it: Pernell Whitaker would carry his right arm across himself, swaying it to-and-fro, and then flick out a back-handed jab. Note also how Whitaker “steals a step” with his back-and-forth rhythm before the jab. #boxing pic.twitter.com/lghToxhkTD

Good Reads
- This in-depth piece on Mackenzie Dern doesn’t address that stupid story about her accent. (You were right, Jesse. She spends a lot of time speaking Portuguese with her parents, so the accent waxes and wanes. Not that complicated)
- Jack Slack’s GIF-heavy breakdown of Edgar-Ortega is historic worth it alone just for the term “Schaubian” to refer to surface-level analysis.
- Bellator bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell is a talented guy, and he’s not satisfied with what he’s accomplished so far.

Pretty cool
The Galton board: 3000 steel balls fall through 12 levels of branching paths and end up matching a bell curve distribution. Each ball has a 50% chance of following each branch such that the balls are distributed by the mathematical binomial distribution https://t.co/Lct4yUi904 pic.twitter.com/4y6EbT39Xb
