UFC London preview: Alexander Volkov is a bad match up for Fabricio Werdum

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight titleholder, Fabricio Werdum, will headline the UFC Fight Night 127 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on UFC Fight Pass, taking place this Saturday night (March 17, 2018) inside O2 Arena in London, England.

Not surprisingly, “Vai Cavalo” is the -200 favorite.

That might come as a surprise to heavyweight opponent Alexander Volkov, as the Bellator MMA import believes he’s a “bad match up” for the venerable Brazilian, who might be past his expiration date.

“I think I’m a bad match up for Fabricio because I am young for a heavyweight,” Volkov said. “It will be like a new generation of this division, so I’m very motivated to be a champion. I have to be ready for everything, but also I have my own favorite movements I will use for this fight.”

Werdum (23-7-1) is trying to work his way back up to a heavyweight title fight since Stipe Miocic stripped him of the strap back in May 2016. Since then, “Vai Cavalo” has compiled a 3-1 record against ho-hum competition.

Volkov (29-6) is the winner of five straight, including last September’s technical knockout win over Stefan Struve. Still just 29, “Drago” is 11 years younger than his Brazilian counterpart. Three of his six losses came on the regional circuit.
