Founded in 2013, Malaysian Invasion MMA (MIMMA) has given numerous amateurs a platform to succeed on the professional scene.
MIMMA has been so successful that many fighters have chosen to remain as amateurs for several years rather than stepping up to compete as professionals. But three fighters from the Tune Talk owned promotion were in action at ONE: “Visions of Victory” last Friday.
Jihin Radzuan was the Malaysian Invasion Season 4 Flyweight Champion. She held a 6-2 amateur record ahead of her ONE Championship debut and this experience served her in good stead against tough Indian opponent Puja Tomar.
Radzuan did not have things all her own way during the fight but ultimately came out on top courtesy of a second round triangle choke. Fighting out of the Ultimate MMA academy in Johor Bahru, she looks to be the next big female Malaysian star.
While Radzuan made her ONE Championship debut at the Axiata Arena Muhmmad Aiman was stepping into the promotion’s cage for the fifth time. He competed on MIMMA Season 1, 2 and 3 finally becoming a champion at the third attempt.
After winning MIMMA’s Season 4 Featherweight Tournament Aiman entered the professional ranks and he registered his fourth ONE Championship win on Friday with a hard fought decision victory over late replacement Rin Saroth.
The biggest name in Malaysian MMA right now is Agilan Thani. He famously fought Ben Askren for the welterweight title last year but before signing with ONE Championship the 22 year old made his name on the amateur scene.
He was the MIMMA Season 2 Welterweight Champion and ran up a 6-0 amateur record before turning pro. After submitting Amitesh Chaubey on Friday the Malaysian now has nine ONE Championship wins, the most in this history of the welterweight division.
In the early days of Malaysian MMA fighters were making their pro debuts without any real experience or training. The scene has evolve rapidly since then and amateurs from the local scene are going on to challenge some of the biggest names in the sport.
