A few weeks ago, current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker took to social media to request his championship rematch against Yoel Romero headline the upcoming UFC 225 pay-per-view (PPV) event on Jun 9, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois.
And according to “Soldier of God,” the title fight will indeed headline the upcoming card, as he confirmed on a recent edition of “The Joe Rogan Experience” that the bout will indeed go down inside the house that Michael Jordan built, as he replied with a simply “yes” when Rogan asked him if that’s when the fight will go down.
Of course, the promotion has yet to make the fight official which could be why Romero was so short. Nevertheless, it’s all the confirmation fight fans need to get amped up for the much-anticipated do-over.
The two initially exchanged blows back at UFC 213, which saw Whittaker walk away with the interim 185-pound strap after doing outscoring “Soldier of God” on the judges’ scorecards. They were set lined up to run it back at UFC 221, but the bout was axed after Robert was forced out of the event due to a bad case of staph infection that was considered “life threatening.”
Whittaker is on track to a full recovery and ready to resume his spot at the top of the 185-pound ladder which he took sole possession of after Georges St-Pierre vacated his 185-poundstrap.
Romero remained on the UFC 221 fight card to face former division champion Luke Rockhold knocking him out in the third round rather violently (see it again here), Yoel was unable to win the interim title — which was on the line — after he came in heavy for the pre-fight weigh-ins.
In the grand scheme of things, it won’t mean much if he can mange to get some revenge on “The Reaper” in “The Windy City.”
