It’s not uncommon for kids to grow up and lose their accents. It is, however, uncommon for them to grow up and lose one accent in favor of another.
That appears to be the case for grappling sensation Mackenzie Dern, who was born in the United States and graduated from Ironwood High School in Glendale, Arizona. The clip from 2010 sounds like a typical American teenager while the clips from 2016 and beyond ... well, you be the judge.
Maybe she’s been hanging around her Brazilian parents?
Dern (5-0) makes her Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut this Saturday night (March 3, 2018) as part of the UFC 222: “Cyborg vs. Kunitskaya” pay-per-view (PPV) event, taking place inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
She faces The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 23 graduate Ashley Yoder (5-3), herself no stranger to the mats, having locked up four submissions in five wins. How that fares against the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champ remains to be seen, as does the accent we’ll get in the post-fight speech.
