Video: Dana White bans ‘idiot’ Mario Yamasaki from reffing future UFC fights

New, comments

Yamasaki doesn’t work for UFC, but White can pressure athletic commissions to keep him off the card.

If the city of Las Vegas wants Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to continue hosting events in “Sin City” -- which equals millions of dollars in state revenue — then longtime referee Mario Yamasaki will have to go the way of the dodo bird.

Mario, we hardly always knew ye.

The embattled man in black came under fire — taking the heat off this guy — after his performance in the UFC Belem co-main event last weekend in Brazil, one that saw flyweight rookie Priscila Cachoeira take unnecessary punishment from veteran title contender Valentina Shevchenko.

Promotion president Dana White weighs in:

“I think he’s disgusting, and I never want to see him reffing ever again. She didn’t tap, and that’s the thing. The reality is, when you’re a fighter – and it’s one of the reasons this sport is as big as it is, because most of you guys don’t tap. Most of you guys stay in there, and she did fight like a warrior. For that idiot to say he gave her the opportunity to be a warrior – no. No, you moron. You’re in there to protect her from herself. He makes me sick. That guy has no business reffing fights. And I promise you, you’re never going to see him again.”

I can think of at least one commission that agrees.

Yamasaki is no stranger to controversy — or White’s post-fight wrath. After a botched finish in the UFC Fight Night 112 main event, the sword-happy fight promoter compared the heart-handed ref to a 12 year-old girl.

It’s unclear what action White can or will take moving forward, but Yamasaki defended his position and has also been able to generate support from both fighters in the FOX Sports 1 contest, though some of that support needs to be questioned.
