Latest UFC rankings update: Valentina Shevchenko shakes up flyweight, bantamweight top 15

New, comments
Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Trouncing an Octagon rookie is typically not the kind of performance that vaults a fighter into the No. 1 contender spot, but then again, Valentina Shevchenko is no ordinary flyweight.

"Bullet," who made her 125-pound debut at the UFC Belem mixed martial arts (MMA) event last weekend in Brazil (full results here), is a former bantamweight title contender with wins over Holly Holm and Julianna Pena, and also took reigning champion Amanda Nunes to the scorecards in two separate fights.

That might explain this massacre.

So, with her big performance in the FOX Sports 1 co-main event, Shevchenko takes over the top flyweight spot and is likely to be next in line for 125-pound champion Nicco Montano. That means a departure from her old bantamweight stomping grounds, giving everyone else at 135 pounds a slight promotion.

Here's how the rankings work, courtesy of UFC.com:

Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, *NR = Not previously ranked).

Sorry, still no division for featherweight champion Cris Cyborg.

You can expect these standings to change -- particularly in the middleweight division -- around this time next week, as the promotion is set to uncork the UFC 221: "Rockhold vs. Romero" pay-per-view (PPV) fight card this Sat. night (Feb. 10, 2018) inside Perth Arena in Perth, Australia (more on that fight card here).
