Before Yoel Romero steps into the Octagon to face Luke Rockhold in the main event of UFC 221 this weekend (Sat., Feb. 10, 2018) in Perth, Australia, let’s take a trip down memory lane to see one of “Soldier of God’s” most dominant wins.
Back in 2016, Romero took on former Middleweight champion Chris Weidman at the stacked UFC 205 pay-per-view (PPV) event in New York City. Looking for his eighth straight win, Yoel found himself in a fight early on, as “All American” wouldn’t back an inch, giving all he had to the powerful wrestler.
But in the third round, things changed in the blink of an eye after “Soldier of God” tagged and dropped the former division champion with a flying knee that had him leaking blood like a faucet. Follwing a few unanswered blows via ground-and-pound, the referre on duty had no choice but to step in to save Weidman.
Now, Yoel will once again look to capture UFC gold when he faces off against Rockhold for the interim title in Perth. With a win, he will earn himself a rematch against Robert Whittaker, the man who defeated him back at UFC 216 in his first-ever world title fight.
