Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sat., March 3, 2018) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, featuring Cris Cyborg in her second women’s featherweight title defense against Octagon newcomer Yana Kunitskaya.

Former lightweight kingpin Frankie Edgar takes over the co-main event slot in hopes of turning away 145-pound up-and-comer Brian Ortega, who comes into the bout on short notice, while former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski takes on 265-pound veteran Stefan Struve.

That’s not all. Not by a long shot.

145 lbs.: UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion Cris Cyborg Santos vs. Yana Kunitskaya

Round 1: Santos lands solid and Yana grabs a takedown. Cyborg stands, but Kunitskaya works to a clinch. She gets Cyborg up against the cage and is hitting some knees. Cyborg defends the takedown attempt. Kunitskaya bails on the single leg. Cyborg breaks away and tick tocks her hard. Kunitskaya is down. She’s back up. More hits and down goes the Russian again. Big ground and pound and Yana is just covering up. Ten or more punches land and finally the ref stops it.

Final result: Santos defeats Kunitskaya by TKO


145 lbs: Frankie Edgar vs. Brian Ortega

Round 1: Frankie in black, Ortega in blue. Edgar on the immediate front foot. Combos and a pair of low kicks. Make that a third. Jab, jab, jab, right hand from the Answer and Ortega is moving backwards. Jabs from Ortega now. Overhand from Edgar. Nice left, too. Edgar with a 3-piece and lands the biscuit at the end. Ortega blocks the right. Both men moving back and forth here, throwing combos. Frankie takes a jab, but answers back with a combo. Ortega threatens a guillotine, but Edgar gets out of it. Nice elbow from Ortega wobbles Edgar. Uppercut floors Edgar! A hammerfist and Jason Herzog stops the fight! Holy crap!

Final result: Ortega defeats Edgar by knockout (elbow and punches)


135 lbs.: Sean O’Malley vs. Andre Soukhamthath

Round 1: O’Malley in green, Andre in black. O’Malley with a pair of hard leg kicks. One straight one and another that was heavy to the outside. Right from Andre. Leg kick from Andre. O’Malley with a straight punch. Big low kick takes the legs out from under Soukhamthath. Question mark kick from O’Malley crashes into the shoulder. O’Malley with a jab into spinning backfist and a headkick. Andre ducked right into a kick that caught him on the dome. He eats it well, but doesn’t get the takedown for his troubles. Right hand gets in for “Sugar”. O’Malley with a right hand catches Andre as he moved his head forward. Roundhouse kick nearly decapitates him. Head kick from O’Malley who’s wobbling badly.

10-8 O’Malley

Round 2: Andre aggressive to start and gets in some punches. O’Malley with a right, ANdre with a leg kick. Andre catches a kick, but can’t get the takedown. Right hand and a left lands for Sean. Andre with a takedown and he finally gets it. O’Malley working for a triangle. Andre is kind of... not doing anything at the moment. He seems accepting of this almost. One hammerfist from Soukhamthath. Armbar from O’Malley, but Andre gets out of it and is now in side control. Knee to the body.

Two minutes left. O’Malley with the butterfly guard, but can’t get to his feet. Andre ducks down poorly and gets stuck in a guillotine. O’Malley spins past the legs of Andre and gets into side control, but there’s under 20 seconds left.

10-9 O’Malley.

Round 3: Andre aggressive again. Leg kick, but eats a jab, too. Souk with the takedown attempt. He’s stalled out on the wall. O’Malley with two left straights. Teep to the gut for O’Malley. O’Malley hurt his foot with a headkick or something. He’s limping and Andre gets O’Malley down. Not getting in much here and he might be better served letting O’Malley try and stand if he’s even able. Elbow from Andre. They stand and let’s see how he is. He’s on one leg... and why is Andre wrestling him? He gets the takedown, but I don’t know why. O’Malley stands and gets in an elbow, but Andre gets him down again. 25 seconds left. Andre with a knee to the torso. Soukhamthath is showing the fight IQ of a pebble. The clock runs down to zero and now O’Malley is screaming in pain. Unreal.

Final result: O’Malley def Soukhamthath by unanimous decision


265 lbs.: Andrei Arlovski vs. Stefan Struve

Round 1: Struve in blue and touching the overhead lights, Arlovski in black. Struve with a low kick that hits Andrei’s head (except he blocks it). Calf kick. Both men trade right hands. Nice overhand from the Pitbull. They clinch and AA gets the trip into half guard. Arlovski gets up and lets Struve stand. Struve is not maintaining distance well, but what else is new? He gets tagged again. One minute left in the round. They clinch and nothing really happens to end the round.

10-9 Arlovski

Round 2: Slow-paced start here. Couple of leg kicks. They clinch a minute in and AA gets a nice takedown again. He’s got Struve stacked, but the Dutchman gets underneath and gets a leg. Struve uses the leglock threat to get on top of Arlovski. He gets Andrei in a turtle position and lands a series of lefts. Arlovski with a fence grab to stay upright and Dean gives a milquetoast warning. AA manages to spin out and now has Struve to the links. Knee tap to get Struve down, but he pops right back up. One minute to go. Ref break with 45 seconds. Andrei... calls time because of an eye poke? I didn’t see ref Herb Dean call time at all. We’re back and they trade low kicks.

10-9 Arlovski in a close round

Round 3: Struve with a nice leg kick. Another. Right hand this time. The pace slows as neither men really land anything for a minute. Left from AA sneaks in. Arlovski gets a clinch and backs up Struve into the links. Stefan pummels a right underhook and gets off. Now Struve gets poked in the eye. They restart and Struve with a pair of low kicks again. Overhand from the Belarusian lands. They clinch and after a couple attempts, Arlovski gets the takedown. Only 50 seconds left and Arlovski is kinda just chilling. Struve gets up and he’s swinging now. Another clinch from AA to stop the flurry. Strong veteran maneuver there.

10-10 to be honest

Final result: Arlovski def Struve by unanimous decision


135 lbs.: Ketlen Vieira vs. Cat Zingano

Round 1: Vieira in yellow, Zingano in black. Zingano aggressive to start, but eats a right. Gets one of her own back. Clinch and an elbow from Vieira. Zingano winging a 3-piece, eats a counter. Another left to Cat’s jaw. Left and a knee for the former title-challenger, Zingano. Strong inside leg kick from Zingano. Zingano with the takedown, but Vieira gets right back up. Body kick from Zingano and a right hand. The Brazilian counters a leg kick with a 2-3. Zingano with the punch-and-clinch. Couple of knees from Zingano and they break apart. Vieira eats another clinch knee, but uses it to get a trip takedown. She’s on top and slowly passing. Zingano regains half guard briefly, but now is in a loose quarter guard. Vieira tries the other side and the bell sounds.

10-9 Vieira in a very close round that could go either way.

Round 2: Zingano comes forward with some kicks. Lands one and then walks forward into a clinch. Vieira uses the momentum for a hip toss directly onto side control. She then works to take the back of Zingano. The American’s trying to get up, but that would risk her neck. Vieira with an arm triangle attempt. Zingano explodes out of the submission attempt, but can’t get back to her feet. Vieira slowly works back into the full guard. Passes to half. Vieira occasionally punching to maintain the action and position while trying slowly to advance her position. She gets to quarter guard again before Zingano manages to get out from under and regains full guard. Nice elbow from the back by Zingano. Zingano trying to threaten a kimura, but is simply stalling it out here.

10-9 Vieira

Round 3: Head kick from Zingano to open the round. Right hand as well. Cat’s limping and it looks like she got a kick checked. Vieira immediately pounces and gets a takedown. Zingano with a butterfly and tries to get an upkick. The flailing and lack of control allows Vieira to get back down on top of Zingano. Vieira abandons side control for half guard in order to keep the position. Vieira stands and the moment Zingano looks like she might stand up and not upkick her, she dives back down onto the top. Two minutes left in this fight and Cat manages to trip a leg. She’s got Vieira back up against the cage and gets in two nice rights. Knees from Zingano, but she’s back up against the cage, so there’s not a lot on them. Vieira milking the clock here. Ref with the break at 44 seconds left. Zingano with a right hand. Left high kick. Zingano is going for it. Body kick. Knees from Zingano.

Final result: Vieira def. Zingano by split decision


115 lbs.: Mackenzie Dern vs. Ashley Yoder

Round 1: Hard punches from Dern early as she hauls Yoder to the fence. Dern staying heavy on her. One minute in. Yoder avoids an outside trip. They separate. Body kick from Yoder, flurry from Dern. Counter left by Yoder as Dern rumbles back in. Both land in the clinch. Yoder exits with a right hand. Dern catches a kick and counters. Combination from Dern, who walks through a left hand as she re-enters the clinch with two minutes to go.

Dern ducks down for a double-leg and looks for the back as Yoder stands. Yoder avoids it and they separate. Straight left by Yoder. One minute to go. Low kick from Yoder. Right hand from Der, straight left by Yoder in return. Low kick and straight left by Yoder. 10-9 Dern.

Round 2: Yoder comes out with a good left hand. Body kick from Dern, left hand from Yoder. Another counter left. They slug it out until Dern gets her to the fence a minute in. Yoder reverses position, lands knees. Two minutes in. Referee separates. Yoder drops Dern with a counter left. Dern pops back to her feet and backs away. Two minutes to go.

Yoder lands a body kick. Counter left off a Dern leg kick. Dern again finds the mark with a straight left. One minute to go. Dern leg kick and they trade right hands. Check hook lands for her. Yoder picks her off with lefts, eats a low kick. Dern shoots, eats a knee. 10-9 Yoder.

Round 3: Two-piece from Yoder early on. Overhand right by Dern and she looks for a single-leg. Knee to the body. Good elbows, Yoder comes back with hard punches. Straight left, knees in the clinch. Dern reverses position on the fence. Two minutes in. They separate. Overhand right from Dern. Leg kick. Again. Left hook. Two minutes to go.

Yoder knocks her back with a straight left. Dern to the body, finally completes a takedown and immediately looks for the back. Full back control. Dern looking for the choke. One minute to go. Dern has it locked up on the chin. Yoder handfights her way out. Yoder survives. 10-9 Dern.

155 lbs.: Beneil Dariush vs. Alexander Hernandez

Round 1: Hernandez fakes a glove touch and marches after Dariush, throwing heat. This strategy pays stunning dividends, as he lands a monstrous left hand that puts the heavily favored Dariush to sleep.

Final result: Hernandez def. Dariush by KO (punch)


135 lbs.: John Dodson vs. Pedro Munhoz

Round 1: Dodson lands a body shot after some early rushes from Munhoz. He catches a kick and counters with a left hand. One minute in. Low kick from Munhoz. Dodson counters a body kick with a low kick, then lands a good low-high combo.Two minutes in. Dodson looking a lot sharper than Munhoz at the moment, countering well. Munhoz steps in with a knee, eats a body shot after getting a kick caught. Munhoz head kick attempt. Dodson catches another body kick. Leg kick. Two minutes to go.

Sneaky left from Dodson, two-piece by Munoz. Knee to the body from Dodson. Dodson catches another kick and dumps him to the mat, backing off. Dodson rips a counter body shot as he circles off the fence. Leg kick with a minute to go, hook from Munhoz in return. Dodson’s catching and/or countering pretty much every kick Munhoz throws. Hard knee to the body. They trade inside. 10-9 Dodson.

Round 2: Dodson continuing to potshot to the head and body. Body kick by Munhoz. Another heavy body shot by Dodson a minute in. Dodson catches yet another kick and unbalances him. Dodson digs another left downstairs. Again. Munhoz falls well short with a wheel kick. Two minutes in. Good body knee and right hand from Munhoz on the cage two minutes in. Dodson with an uppercut. Counter left by Munhoz. Yet again Dodson nails the body, eats a right hand. Dodson body kick, Munhoz 1-2. Dodson catches another kick, eats a jab. Two minutes to go.

Dodson to the body. Munhoz finds teh mark with a right hand. Counter left by Dodson. Another body kick by Munhoz. One minute to go. Munhoz leg kick, then a head kick. Dodson with a sharp jab. Left hand by Munhoz. Munhoz lands on one leg. Late groin shot from Munhoz. 10-9 Munhoz on the late work.

Round 3: Munhoz steps in with a right hand and now they’re trading. Munhoz getting the better of these exchanges. Dodson signals a groin strike. Body knee from Dodson, but Munhoz staying on him. Sharp left lands for Dodson. Leg kick from Munhoz. One minute in. Dodson circling around, staying mobile. Both fire left hands. Dodson lands three consecutive left hands. Munhoz pops him with a right cross, eats more lefts two minutes in. Another counter left by Dodson. Again, harder this time. Dodson lands yet another left hand. Hard right from Munhoz as Dodson circles off. Dodson combo with two minutes to go.

Big left hand by Dodson, long right by Munhoz, who lands a knee. Fancy cartwheel by Munhoz after he gets another kick caught. Counters again by Dodson. Munhoz shoots, gets Dodson to the mat. One minute to go. Dodson pushing his head down, gets to a knee. Dodson grabs the fence as Munhoz works. Knees to the thigh from Munhoz and punches as Dodson stands. They trade huge shots to end the fight. 10-9 Dodson.

Final result: Dodson def. Munhoz by split decision


185 lbs.: C.B. Dollaway vs. Hector Lombard

Round 1: Dollaway fires an early head kick. He checks a low kick. One minute in. Body kick this time. Another body kick, Lombard catches it but can’t use it. Two minutes in. Another kick, Lombard tries a counter hook. Low kicks landing for Lombard. Two minutes to go.

Lombard with a flurry, appears to land a left on the fence. Inside low kick, then to the outside. These are unbalancing Dollaway. Good counter left. Dollaway with a right downstairs, hook from Lombard, who eats another body kick. Dollaway throws another body kick at the bell and Lombard drops him with a counter left as the ref is breaking them up. Hoo boy. 10-9 Lombard.

Dollaway is completely discombobulated. The referee was saying “stop” before Lombard threw the punches. This should be a DQ. It is.

Final result: Dollaway def. Lombard by DQ (punches after the bell)


170 lbs.: Zak Ottow vs. Mike Pyle

Round 1: Ottow with an early flurry, lands a left hand. Spinning back kick attempt. Pyle lands a front kick. Another left hand by Ottow. One minute in. Jabs from both men. Low leg kick by Ottow, right cross from Pyle. Ottow swinging for the fences early. Ottow drops Pyle with an overhand right and pounds away from guard. Pyle covers up and there’s the stoppage.

Final result: Ottow def. Pyle by TKO (punches)


135 lbs.: Bryan Caraway vs. Cody Stamann

Round 1: Caraway fakes a level change early. Body shot. Real level change this time, manages to elevate Stamann’s leg but can’t complete it. One minute in. Stamann with some short blows in the clinch, shakes off a low blow. Caraway drives in again, separates. Stamann with his hands low. Two minutes in. Caraway shoots and they trade knees two minutes in. Knee from Stamann, who stuffs another shot and trades punches in the clinch. Short uppercut from Caraway, right hand from Stamann. Caraway pops him with jabs. Two minutes to go.

Nice shot from Caraway into half guard. Stamann tries to use a butterfly hook, cannot dislodge him. One minute to go. Caraway passes over Stamann’s butterfly guard into side control, then whacks away from a no-arm triangle control. Caraway looks for a Kimura, transitions to an armbar before the bell. 10-9 Caraway.

Round 2: Hard counter hook by Stamann early. Stamann tries a combo, eats a jab. One minute in. Stamann lands a good right hand in combination. Caraway shoots, stuffed. Caraway finds the mark with an uppercut and Stamann waves him on. Low kick by Stamann, hook from Caraway. Nice uppercut catches Stamann leaning, Stamann responds with blows in the clinch. Leg kick and he stuffs a Caraway takedown. Stamann stuffs another takedown two minutes in. Both land inside, but Stamann finds the mark with some heavy right hands. Caraway lands a right hand, gets sprawled on. Two minutes to go.

Glancing right by Caraway. Left hook and uppercut. Caraway gets in deep, still can’t finish the takedown. Knees from both men on the fence. Caraway looking for a single-leg, cannot run the pipe. Stamann stuffs him again and lands a clean 1-2. Stamann denies another level change, can’t quite lands the knee on the way up. Caraway shoots again. 10-9 Stamann.

Round 3: Stamann tries an early head kick. Left hook counter off a Caraway leg kick. Great 1-2 by Stamann, then both connect. One minute in. Low leg kick by Stamann. Stamann stuffs another takedown, rips the body. Two minutes in. Caraway gets in on a single-leg, cannot complete it. 3-2 from Caraway. Stamann limp-legs out of a right hand and they trade right hands. Two minutes to go.

Both landing well. Right hand and a stiff jab from Stamann. Right cross, another stuffed takedown. Caraway finds the mark inside, barrelling in and shrugging off Stamann’s shots. One minute to go. Stamann digs in knees on the fence. More knees. Both landing punches in the clinch. Caraway feints, still can’t get him down. They’re going for it. Stamann shoots directly into a guillotine. Saved by the bell. Man, this is close. 10-9 Stamann.

205 lbs.: Jordan Johnson vs. Adam Milstead

Round 1: Counter hook from Johnson early. Milstead comes back with a leg kick, eats one in return, and trades combos. Milstead’s throwing flurries, looks to have significantly greater hand speed. One minute in. 1-1-2 lands for him. Uppercut from Milstead, who avoids a clinch. Johnson leg kicks answered by right hands. Two minutes in. Johnson shoots, denied. Still no super clean connections. Johnson ducks in once again, chains his way through various attempts. Two minutes to go.

Johnson snap-kicking Milstead’s calf. Chopping right by Milstead inside. Point-blank elbow hurts Johnson, who backs away. One minute to go. Uppercut lands for him as Johnson wades back into the clinch. 10-9 Milstead.

Round 2: Good jab from Johnson met by a right hand. More jabs. Milstead slips and Johnson again ties up, whacking the body as he does. One minute in. Johnson with some short blows to the head and thighs. He’s alternating grips as he works. Two minutes in. Good right hands by Milstead inside. Ref separates them. Right hand from Milstead, but Johnson drags him to the mat with two minutes to go.

MIlstead on one knee against the fence. Milstead gets back to his feet. More short whacks from Johnson. Milstead appears to threaten a guillotine with a minute to go, not there. Ref breaks them up. Another jab from Johnson. 10-9 Johnson.

Round 3: They swing early, left hook lands for Milstead. He counters a low kick with a right hand that forces Johnson to stumble back and tie up. Milstead exits the clinch. Johnson still working his jab. One minute in. Milstead cross counter glances off. Good hook from Johnson, who shoots once again. They separate. Jabbing in the center two minutes in. Johnson left hook, overhand right by Milstead. Milstead lands a solid hook. Two minutes to go.

Johnson shoots in for a single-leg and completes it on the fence. Milstead looking for the switch. One minute to go. Milstead works his way to the feet and Johnson continues to look for a double-leg, eating punches from under the armpits. Milstead lands a hard knee as he continues to defend the takedowns, then flurries at the bell. Close round. 10-9 Johnson.
