MMA: UFC Fight Night-St. Louis-Stephens vs Choi Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

Featherweight heavy hitters Josh Emmett and Jeremy Stephens clashed tonight (February 24th, 2018) at UFC on FOX 28 from inside Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, live and free on big Fox.

At stake was an unlikely place in featherweight title contention. Josh Emmett had rocketed onto the scene as a late replacement by viciously knocking out top contender Ricardo Lamas, while veteran Jeremy Stephens had been putting his game together, winning two straight against Gilbert Melendez and Doo Ho Choi.

They touched gloves. Emmett circled on the outside. Both fighters seemed wary to close the gap. Stephens threw a low kick. Emmett threw one back. Emmett slipped forward, looking for a hook, but nothing doing. He landed an overhand and Stephens countered with a couple hard hooks. Emmett landed a low kick to the groin, and Stephens walked away to recover. They restarted, Emmett threw up a high kick, blocked. Stephens ate a right straight from Emmett when he attempted his knee. Emmett darted in with a hook. Stephens landed a combination of his own. This battle of really hard hooks and legendary chins is fascinating. Emmett ate a left hook. Stephens feinted, rushed in, ate a hook on the way and went down!! Emmett worked from top half guard, landing hard ground and pound! Stephens got back to his feet. Emmett threw a flying switch knee. He landed a leg kick. Stephens stalked forward, trading body kicks as the round ended.

Emmett feinted his way in, Stephens whiffed on a couple hard hooks. Stephens landed a spinning backfist. He ducked under an overhand from Emmett. Jeremy Stephens knocked down Emmett with a counter hook! He looked for the finish, nearly landed an illegal knee, then put Emmett’s lights out for good with a huge diving elbow! What a finish that was! Jeremy Stephens is a killer.

Jeremy Stephens shouted to Orlando that he had come to party! He then repeated his line against McGregor, that he is the real hardest hitting 145-pounder out there. He gave Josh Emmett a lot of credit for putting him on his butt, but he said he’s unbreakable. “We were swinging, that dude swings leather.” Then he got down on his knees and begged Dana for a title shot, citing his long career and saying only three guys are ahead of him. He certainly has a case to be next in line after the Edgar-Ortega winner, with three wins in a row, although both Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar have beaten him in the recent past.

Official result: Jeremy Stephens def. Josh Emmett via knockout at 1:35 of round 2
