After getting yanked from his matchup with Olivier Aubin-Mercier this weekend at UFC on FOX 28 due to weight-cutting issues, Brazilian lightweight Gilbert Burns has been re-booked for a 155-pound tilt opposite Lando Vannata at UFC on FOX 29 on April 14 from Glendale, Arizona, per a recent report by Combate.
Burns, 31, is coming off a memorable knockout victory over Canadian prospect Jason Saggo back at UFC Fight Night 116 this past September. The Brazilian submission specialist has made steady strides over the past few years, but has yet to truly cash in on his potential. Burns will look to build on his 5-2 divisional record and put his recently botched weight cut behind when he takes on “Groovy” in Glendale.
Vannata, 25, is arguably a step up in competition from Aubin-Mercier. The Greg Jackson protege is coming off a draw opposite Bobby Green at UFC 216 this past October, but has captured three Fight of the Night bonuses and one Performance of the Night award in just four Octagon appearances since his debut in 2016. The wild-striking lightweight will have to work on his ground game leading into his battle with Burns, but Vannata’s offensive capabilities on the feet could very well take over this fight.
UFC on FOX 29 will feature a main event lightweight clash pitting fan favorite Justin Gaethje against veteran contender Dustin Poirier. The card will also feature a welterweight scrap between former UFC interim champion Carlos Condit and the always entertaining Matt Brown.
