A few days after Kelvin Gastelum expressed his desire to face Ronaldo Souza, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) officials announced the booking of the Middleweight matchup, which is set to go down at UFC 224 on May 12, 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
MMA Fighting was the first to report the news.
Gastelum is coming off a knockout win over Michael Bisping at UFC Shanghai last November. Souza, meanwhile, is fresh off a first-round drubbing of Derek Brunson at UFC “Charlotte” just last month, his second win over the top 185-pound contender.
This matchup will surely clear up the 185-pound championship race, as it’s easy to assume the victor will get next dibs at the hardware. Of course, it will be a bit of a waiting game, as division king Robert Whittaker is still nursing some wounds. Once he’s ready and able, he will defend the belt against Yoel Romero.
In the meanwhile, Kelvin and “Jacare” will do the deed in what will be a clash of styles, as Souza has made his bread on the mat, while Kelvin has been known to knock them out on the feet. Still, Ronaldo isn’t a stranger to getting it done in the standup department.
