Chris Weidman recently went on record saying that despite Yoel Romero getting an impressive knockout over Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 last Saturday (Feb. 10, 2018) in Perth, Australia (see it here), he deserved to leapfrog “Soldier of God” in the title race.
This, despite the fact that UFC president Dana White has already confirmed Romero’s championship rematch against division kingpin Robert Whittaker.
Nevertheless, one person takes issue with “All American's” title requests, as former division champion Michael Bisping can’t help but to laugh at Weidman, since his recent track record doesn’t indicate he’s anywhere close to the gold.
“You know what’s funny? Chris Weidman, he’s saying that he should get a title shot,” Bisping said in a recent edition of his “Beleive You Me’ podcast (transcript via MMA NYTT). “I think that’s kind of laughable Chris,” said the former 185-pound champion.
“I don’t want to get into a whole beef with Chris Weidman, but you did get knocked out in three of your last four fights. I don’t think that makes you eligible for a title shot.”
Nevertheless, you won‘t convince Weidman —another former 185-pound champion -- that he isn’t good enough to vie for the title so soon after getting back on the winning track. Still, it’s something that is unlikely to happen barring an injury to Romero.
That said, perhaps Weidman should turn his attention to Bisping and throw his name in the hat to be his retirement fight while waiting to see how Whittaker vs Romero 2 plays out.
Just a thought.
