Welcome to Midnight Mania!
In an all-time classic heavyweight bout last weekend, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury went the distance- but only after Fury got up from one of the most hellacious knockdowns you’ve ever seen, from the sports’ hardest puncher, as if from the dead. It was an astonishing moment, one that surprised Wilder as much as any of us, judging by his reaction. The fight went on to be scored a split draw, leaving most viewers thinking Fury had been robbed of a win, as many believe he won every round except the two that Wilder knocked him down in.
However, Wilder’s fans don’t concur, and in fact, Wilder himself believes that he won. In support of this belief, he tweeted ‘proof’ Fury didn’t really make the count, using a timer to clock ten seconds, and claiming that Fury didn’t make the count.

Ultimately, Wilder said in interview that he’s glad that Fury did recover, as he doesn’t believe he would have gotten credit for the win given Fury’s backstory leading up to the bout. He probably also is seeing the opportunity to make money in a rematch, as their fight apparently did quite well even just with the US Pay-Per-View numbers.
There is a certain irony in Wilder making the factually incorrect claim that he ‘won’ a split draw most observers believe he should have lost, then using the phrase “blind MFs that can’t face reality”. According to former top MMA referee Big John McCarthy, the ten-count is just that: a count by the referee, not a ten-second interval of time.
1/2 Yes sir, I can explain it to you. You need to understand the mechanics for a knockdown which is as soon as the referee calls the fighter down the time keeper starts a count. The referee moves the standing fighter away towards a neutral corner and then picks up the count from https://t.co/OWVqdORZuS— Big John McCarthy (@JohnMcCarthyMMA) December 3, 2018
2/2 the timekeeper at we will say somewhere around 3 or 4. The referee then continues his count up to 10 if the fighter is still down. It is a “10” count not 10 seconds of time. The referee was perfect in this situation. Hope this helps. It was a great fight, wasn’t it https://t.co/OWVqdORZuS— Big John McCarthy (@JohnMcCarthyMMA) December 3, 2018
Odds for the rematch between Wilder and Fury opened dead even.
Robert Whittaker is one of the nicest, most genuine guys in the sport- but he doesn’t think switching opponents at the last second from Gastelum to Adesanya would be right.
Adesanya has first-meeting stories with both main event fighters- even if Gastelum doesn’t remember meeting him a buffet, that’s too perfect.

If you can dish it, you better be able to take it.

You have to turn sound on for this one...
Super Sodiq Yusuff was an inspiring but sad story this weekend, crying on the treadmill over losing his brother but still going out and handling his business in his UFC debut.
Here is the story on Sodiq Yusuff (@Super_Sodiq), who fights to improve his family's life in Nigeria. He lost a member of that family recently, right before making his UFC debut. https://t.co/bE2BctuB53— Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) December 4, 2018
This boxer, Dereck Chisora, said he was going to go through his opponent Dillion Whyte like a laxative, and I think it’s the funniest line of trash talk I’ve ever heard.
The Fight to Save Flyweight: Joseph Benavidez vs. Deiveson Figueiredo. Seriously, these two in the cage might just convince everyone flyweight is worth keeping.
Tenshin Nasukawa sparring Jorge Linares? I want to see the footage even more than the full Dillashaw-Lomachenko sparring video.
How exactly was this supposed to work?

Part 4(?) of my Weird Pistol Tour: the rocket pistol. The Gyrojet was a government project in the 1960s that ended up getting terminated but not before they made tiny rocket bullets that fire out of specialized rifles and pistols. Read about it here, or just watch someone donate their irreplacable ammunition to blow a GoPro off a dummy and hit a watermelon:
