The two best female fighters on the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) roster, Bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes and Featherweight queenpin Cris Cyborg, tonight (Sat., Dec. 29, 2018) locked horns in UFC 232’s pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event inside The Forum in Inglewood, California. It was an unprecedented women’s “Champion vs. Champion” bout with Cyborg’s 145-pound title on the line.
And it was awesome.
They both came out swinging leather from the jump, with both ladies landing ferocious shots. Cyborg landed first, and then again, but then Nunes countered with a brutal combination that dropped Cyborg to a knee. Cyborg returned to her feet, wobbly, and backed up to the cage, where Nunes drilled her with a clean right hand that dropped her again. Cyborg somehow got up again and Nunes lit her up with a vicious right hook and then a left hook, which felled Cyborg again. Once again, Cyborg managed to stand up, but Nunes drilled her with an overhand right in the temple that put her out cold!
What an incredible 51 seconds of action. Pure insanity — Nunes just finished the scariest woman on the planet, Cyborg, who had not tasted defeat in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition since 2005. And she bested her at her own violent striking game.
Nunes now joins Daniel Cormier and Conor McGregor as the only UFC fighter to hold two belts simultaneously in two different weight classes. Just let that sink in. Goosebumps.
