Reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes cashed in on a gigantic opportunity last night (Sat., Dec. 29, 2018) at UFC 232 live on pay-per-view from inside The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., when she upset the seemingly unbeatable UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg with a vicious knockout finish just 51 seconds into the first round.
The co-main event superfight didn’t last all that long as Cyborg and Nunes both collided in the center of the Octagon. Cyborg seemed to impose her will with the first few shots but it was Nunes who started to take control. “Lioness” landed a brutal combination that buckled Cyborg badly. The featherweight champion returned to her feet only to meet more offense by Nunes, who unloaded with huge right hands and precise combinations along the cage. One final right hand toppled Cyborg and sent her head spiraling to the canvas.

With this performance, Nunes not only becomes the first fighter to ever knockout the legendary Cris Cyborg, but she becomes the first women’s two-division champion in UFC history. There’s a good chance Cyborg gets a second opportunity to take out Nunes so “Lioness” may be put back in the fire sooner than later. But if she fights with the aggressiveness and precision that she did at UFC 232 there should be nothing to worry about.
