Bottoms up! All the disgusting shoeys from UFC Adelaide

Well, we might as well call it: the ‘Shoey’ is now the official drink of UFC Australia. Once relegated to Bogan hazing rituals, chugging beer out of a nasty shoe made its jump into the world of combat sports on account of Tai Tuivasa. Now you can’t have a UFC event down under without seeing several stars swigging stinky suds.

Before we go any further, let’s let Tai explain the shoey for the uninitiated.

“It’s just an everyday thing in Australia,” he said after his first high profile shoey at UFC 221 in Perth. “That was a reasonable, fairly lower kind of shoey. Usually you get someone to spit in it, everybody spits in it and then you obviously skull it. So ... welcome to Australia. Usually you get somebody’s work boot, that was a pretty new shoe, so that was all right. That was easy.”

With Tuivasa losing his UFC Adelaide fight to Junior dos Santos (watch the finish here), we didn’t see any shoeys from “Bam Bam”, leaving it up to the rest of the roster to pick up the slack. The double champ Daniel Cormier kicked things off on UFC Tonight:

And then during the event, Israel “The Stylebender” Adesanya celebrated the announcement of his Anderson Silva fight with a fresh red shoey.

Adesanya’s mum was not impressed.

Junior dos Santos may be one of the nicest guys in the sport, but not so nice that you can pressure him into doing a shoey. Here he is after his win refusing a refreshing sneaker beverage on the way back to the locker room.

Leading up to the fight, dos Santos registered his dislike of the ‘tradition.’

”I don’t even know what to say,” he told reporters (via MMA Fighting). “It’s disgusting, it’s really disgusting. That’s ... wow, I don’t even know what to say. That’s really disgusting. Are you nuts? Some guy even spit on the shoe and they kept exchanging it. The video I saw had three guys spitting in the shoe and putting beer on it, and then they drank it. That’s absurd.”
