Boxing once again managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday night (Dec. 1, 2018) when the wild Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury Heavyweight championship match-up ended in a split decision draw.
But ,even that eye-roller of a scorecard couldn’t ruin the enjoyment we got from the end of the bout. The crowd went wild when Wilder knocked down Fury in the ninth frame and no one was sitting in the twelfth stanza when Wilder once again cracked Fury with a right-left combo that completely flattened “The Gypsy King.”
It looked like a knockout finish, and probably would have been according to many refs. But, referee Jack Reese started a 10 count, and Fury managed to rise from the canvas somehow, not unlike his oft-mentioned lord and savior. No one was more surprised than Wilder himself, who was halfway through a celebration shimmy when he realized the fight wasn’t over yet.
