Conor McGregor blames ONE Championship ‘greed’ for demise of UFC flyweight division

I know social media is the place for all those “hot takes” ... but this is just hot garbage.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) two-division champion, Conor McGregor, lashed out at ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong for poaching ex-flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson, because it caused a domino effect within the 125-pound ranks.

Leading to massive cuts, according to this report.

“You must now take all the 125lbers that have been let go, Chatri,” McGregor wrote on Twitter. “You talk all of this martial art and respect talk, yet your greed has directly cost more than half a fighting division its chance to earn income for their family. Have respect @YODCHATRI. Sign the division.”

I think my biggest problem with this argument is that losing Johnson actually opened up the division, allowing flyweight contenders trapped by “Mighty Mouse” to go after newly-crowned champion Henry Cejudo, creating new and exciting match ups previously not in play.

And as good as he was, Johnson couldn’t draw flies, as they say.

ONE Championship also gave up Ben Askren in the process, allowing a competitor to use its former welterweight champion to make money at this upcoming pay-per-view (PPV) event, plus score whatever momentum the motor-mouthed Olympian can generate along the way.

If the flyweight division was making money, then UFC would be looking to bolster it, not dissolve it, because prize fighting only works when there’s a prize. That’s why White and Co. haven't liquidated the lightweight division after another former champion, Eddie Alvarez, set sail for Singapore.

Maybe McGregor should stop having Proper No. 12 for breakfast.
