6th-ranked Alistair Overeem took a step back in competition to face UFC newcomer Sergey Pavlovich in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 141 this morning (Saturday, November 24, 2018) inside Cadillac Arena in Beijing, China, broadcast only on the UFC’s digital network, Fight Pass. Pavlovich was coming into the bout undefeated, sporting a 12-0 record with 9 TKOs.

Overeem opened with feints, moving his head from side to side as he took the center of the cage. Pavlovich threw a left hook, then connected on a right overhand. He backed Overeem up with the threat of an uppercut. Overeeem wove his way into the clinch and pinned Pavolvich to the cage, got reversed, fended off a takedown, then saw a takedown attempt of his own foiled. Pavlovich spun him onto the cage again, countering Overeem’s clinch knees with short hooks. He dropped for a double-leg, didn’t get it, and they moved back into open space. Overeem was using a high guard, threw a right hand into the clinch and swept Pavlovich, putting him on his back. Overeem went into guard, then stood over Pavlovich looking for his openings. He began dropping big shots, and Pavlovich covered up! The referee stepped in as Pavlovich turned away, and the sudden ground assault won the day for Overeem!

Overeem said he told us he was back, and that he put in a LOT of work for this fight with Team Elevation, which includes light heavyweight standout Dominick Reyes and the man in the main event, Curtis Blaydes.

Official result: Alistair Overeem def. Sergey Pavlovich via TKO at 4:21 of Round 1
